Annual Weizmann Event Transforme
Into Mobilization for Israel's Defense

NEW YORK A in e c a n
Jewry's most colorful event of
the year, the annual dinner of
the . Ainerican Committee for
the Weizmann Institute of Sci-
ence in Israel, held Tuesday
$ the Waldorf Astoria here,
WaS transformed into a new
Mobilization effort in defense
Of Israel's human rightS.
Mrs. Chaim , Weizmarin, Sen.
Herbert H. Lehman and Am-
bassador Abba S Eban sounded
the keynote of the gathering
with a combined indictment of
the injustice imposed upon
'Israel by the United Nations
and the harsh treatment ac-
corded the Jewish state by U.
S. representatives at the UN.
The 1,500 at the dinner, each
of whom paid $250 per cover
to help "build- Israel through
science," - included many • of
American Jewry's most , dis-
tinguished leaders.
Under the chairmanship of

Abraham Feinberg, • who de-
sCribed the accomplishinents of
the Weizthann InStitute and
called it "an oasis in the desert
of ignorance in the Middle
East" the urgent need for peace
in that area was outlined. The
main thesis of the function was
a call for action for peace. •
Mrs. Weizmann, widow of the
first president of Israel and
founder of • the institute that
bears his name, challenged any
nation to have acted differently
in the crisis that faced Israel,
and . emphasized that "Israel
wishes nothing more. than peace
for everyone?' -• •
Ambassador, Eban declared
that his nation had "to make a
choice whether to be popular
or to be alive, and Israel chose
'to be alive."
Sen. Lehman was critical of
the manner in which statesmen
sat idly by watching Israel's
position being endangered, and

President's Conference Appeals
to Ike for Egyptian Intervention

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire '

NEW YORK — President Ei-
senhower was asked Tuesday by
American Jewish leaders from
27 states to intervene with
Egypt against the mass depor-
tation of Jews from that coun-
try and confiscation of their
property. The President also
Was asked to instruct the
American delegation at the
United Nations to bring to the
attention of the UN the fact
that thousands of Jews in Egypt
have been served with deporta-
tion orders or hurled into in-
ternment camps.
The appeal was issued by the
two-day conference convened by
presidents of 17 major national
Jewish organizations which
concluded Tuesday night. The
cOnference discussed problems
concerning American-Israel re-
lations in connection with the
Middle East crisis.
The conference concluded
with the adoption of resolu-
tions calling upon the United
Sfates Government to lay the
basis for direct Arab-Israel ne-
gotiations. A plea that the free
World nations "reunite their
strength" to preserve world
peace was made by Israel Am-
bassador Eban at conference's
conchae- session.
Four presidents of major or-
ganizations addressed the open-
ing session of the conference, a
consultative group embracing
the leaders of 17 national Jew-
ish groups.
' The speakers were Dr. Na-
hum Goldmann of the Jewish
Agency, Philip M. Klutznick of
Bnai Brith, pr. Israel Gold-
stein of the American Jewish

Congress, and Dr. Maurice Ei-
sendrath of the Union of Amer-
ican Hebrew Congregations.
More than 250 delegates froni
27 states attended the sessions
at the Hotel Delmonico.
Criticizing the UN armistice -
solution as a "demonstrably un-
tenable" basis for Arab-Israel
relations, Dr. Goldrnann urged
that the United States "invest
its enormous prestige" to bring
about peace between Israel' and
the Arabs.

it's the

ATUR L thing to do!

If the present crisis "produces
nothing better than an uneasy
armistice," Dr. Goldmann added,
"there will be no security for
Israel, for, the Arabs or for the
world community. A return to
the status quo ante would en-
courage extreme Arab nation-
alism and produce new conflicts
which may be far more diffi-
cult to check than the present
crisis."
Klutznick emphasizedthat the
dispute between Israel and her
Arab antagonists has outgrown
its early province and is now
overshadowed by the global
conflict between the Soviet bloc
and the free world.
"The threat of Soviet belliger-
ency," he said, "is not that the
communists will smother Israel.
The threat is how fast and how
far the Communists will move
into an area of such political
and economic significance to
the free world that, should the
communists take over the Mid-
dle East, they take over the
balance of world power with it."
