Agudath Israel of America,
national orthodox Jewish move-
ment called upon President
Eisenhower and Sec. of State
Dulles, to launch an investiga-
tion of alleged statements by
Edwin Wright, Assistant Dean
of the Foreign Service Institute
of the State Department, which
"seriously defamed the ortho-
dox Jewish citizens of the
United States." In separate let-
ters addressed to Eisenhower
and Dulles, Michael G. Tress,
administrative president of the
organization, declared that Mr.
Wright allegedly maligned or
thodox Jews as having "contrib-
uted nothing to the advance-
ment of our modern world," and
that "no Jewish scientists are
orthodox."
Mr. Wright is purported to
have made these statements in
an address delivered at the Na-
tional Presbyterian Church in
Washington. His address was re-
ported in the "National Jewish
Post." Mr. Wright, the Agudath
Israel letter further charged,
also allegedly declared that
"Jewish religion doesn't allow
people to think" and accused
Jews of "dual loyalty." "These
are irresponsible canards remi-
niscent of some of the choice
mouthings of Nazi propagan-
dists," the Agudath Israel letter
declared.
The Agudath Israel request
has been taken under advise-
ment by State Dept. officials.
The Agudath Israel letter
states: "It is unthinkable that a
government official should per-
mit himself to so callously ma-
lign the millions of American
citizens of orthodox Jewish
faith, who have made their
productive contributions t o
every phase of American life.
Their religious faith has often
been the source of inspiration."
In a separate statement re-
leased to the press, Rabbi Morris
Sherer, executive vice-president
of Agudath Israel of America,
specifically refuted Mr. Wright's
