Burma's Jewish Community

Dwindles to 30 Families
NEW YORK, (WJA)—Details
on the decline of Burma's Jew-
ish community to only 30 fam-
ilies were received here by the
World Jewish Congress from
A.D.A. David, honorary sec-
retary of the Rangoon syna-
gogue committee, now visiting
the U.S.
At the time of the Japanese
Occupation, David said, about
2,000 Jews, the bulk of the com-
munity, fled to India. After the
war the 150 remaining were
joined by 400 Jews- who return-
ed from Calcutta. Gradually,
however, migration to English-
speaking countries and Israel
reduced the number.

Israel Viewpoint
Given by Eban

Israel's Ambassador ABBA
EBAN is shown here address-
ing the United Nations on
Israel's position in the present
crisis. He said Israel intends
to evacuate Egypt, but insist-
ed the UN must insure that
the Sinai Peninsula will not
be used again as a spring-
board for any more armed
attacks on Israel.

Honor Col. Oberdorfer
on Air Force Retirement

ATLANTA, (JTA)—Col. Eu-
gene Oberdorfer, Atlanta civic
leader, was retired, with full
military honors, from the
United States Air Force this
week when he reached his 60th
birthday. His military career
covered 31 years, active and re-
serve.
Col. Oberdorfev saw service
with Gen. Pershing in Mexico,
in World War I as an infantry
commandant and with the Air
Force in World War II. He was
retired in 1950 as a brigadier
general of the National Guard
of Georgia. He is chairman for
the Third Army area of the
Jewish Welfare Board—Armed
Service s. Division. He was
awarded a third Oak Leaf Clus-
ter for his commendation rib-
bon in ceremonies at Warner
Robins Air Field.

Life in Gaza Strip
Returning to Normalcy

TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Israel's
declared intention of evacuat-
ing Egyptian territory has
caused unrest among the resi-
dents of Gaza, with hostile ele-
ments inciting the other Arabs
to oppose the Israeli regime.
However, life is becoming
more normal in Gaza, as shops
i the
open and people work in
fields and groves. There has
been little response to the Is-
raeli call for an exchange of
Egyptian currency for Israeli,
chiefly because many people
believe the Egyptians will re-
turn. The schools remain closed
because the teachers;. most of
whom were Egyptian, fled with
the army.
Normalcy is also returning to
El Arish, railway terminus
where many - of the inhabitants
have been employed by Israeli
authorities to work on the road.
Three trains arrive and depart
daily from El Arish, bringing
UNRWA relief supplies. The
refugees remain under UNRWA
care.

NEW ORLEANS, (JTA)—The
American Council for Judaism,
at the conclusion of a two-day
session of its national advisory -
board here, issued a statement
emphasizing that it speaks only
for its own members on matters
concerning Jews.
The statement added that it is
"committed to the universal
truths of Prophetic Judaism—
entirely free of qualifications by
the national interests of any for-
eign state."
The ACJ statement declares
further, "We have an abiding
sympathy for all of our co-re-
ligionists who are in want or
distress regardless of their coun-
try of residence, including Is-
rael.
"This is solely a humanitarian
interest 'and is an attribute
which is shared by our fellow
citizens. Our attitude to foreign
nations is purely and simply
that of any American. We have
no entangling alliance with or
allegiance, explicit or implied,
to any foreign country."

COLOGNE (JTA)—The pres-
ent Middle , East conflict has
given rise to no modifications
in the placement of reparations
orders nor has it affected
reparations shipments, Dr. F. E.
Shinnar, head of the Israel
Purchasing Mission in Germany,
declared in an interview here.
The kind and quantity of
reparations goods to be made
available by West Germany in
the course of each fiscal year
—from April -1 to March 31—
have always been determined
on the basis of negotiations
conducted at the end of the
calendar year by economic ex-
perts who make up the German-
Israel Mixed Commission. In
accordance with the practice
followed during the past three
years, such negotiations with
respect to the 1957-58 fiscal
year will open next month, Dr.
Shinnar disclosed. He expects
that . they will be completed by
February or March.
Israel will ask no major
changes in the schedule of
commodities and services, it
was stated by Dr. Shinnar, who
has been in charge of the Israel
Purchasing Mission since its in-
ception. On the other hand,
Israel will demand that West
Germany earmark for repara-
tion purchase in the 1957-58
fiscal year the norrnal annual
rate of payment stipulated in
the Reparations Agreement —
$73,000,000.

Israeli Flag Flies from Mt. Sinai

The Israel flag flew on Mt.
JERUSALEM, (JTA)
Sinai where, according to the Bible, Moses received the
Ten Commandments and where the Christian monastery of
St. Catherine now stands, according to "Bamachneh," weekly
publication of the Israel Army.
The flag was hoisted by four Israel soldiers who trav-
eled ' through the desert in a jeep until they arrived at an
oasis surrounding the high mountain where the ancient
monastery stands in the shadow of gigantic cliffs 6,'700 feet
above the sea level.
After a dangerous ascent, the soldiers found the entry
to the monastery and were met -by 12 Greek Orthodox
monks who greeted them "in the name of Moshe Rabenu
and in the name of St. Catherine."
