New Oak Park Ranches
Offer $9,000 Price Range
A variety of face brick ranch
homes, ranging in price from
$23,000 to $32,000 has been made
available to meet the tremen-
dous demand for homes in Oak
Park, according to real estate
broker, Nelson, McIntyre.
The homes will be located in
the new Samuel Wolok & Sons
No r t h Suburban Subdivision,
with a model home now located
at 15211 Rosemary, two blocks
north of W. 9 Mile, just west of
Radclift.
Mr. McIntyre stated this week
that an extensive survey just
conducted indicates that the de-
mand for new housing falls into
the price ranges offered in the
new subdivision.
`The Joker Is Wild'
Jean Crain, born in Holly-
Wood, a film star at 17, has
been .signed for the female lead
in "The Joker is Wild," the
musical based upon the hilari-
ous life of Joe E. Lewis, the
nightclub star and one of the
country's greatest wits. Sam-
uel Briskin produces the movie,
with songs by Sammy Cahn
and James Van Heusen.
On the Record
.
By NATHAN ZIPRIN
Lispky the Author . .
Although he is now approaching his eightieth birthday,
neither hail, nor rain, nor storm — nor even war itself — can halt
Louis Lipsky. Now in Israel for a month's stay, Lipsky arrived
in Rome to learn about the hostilities in the Middle East. He was
advised not to continue the journey. His reply was that because
of that situation he felt obliged more than ever to go to Israel.
His return to the United States will coincide with the publication
by Farrar, Straus, & Cudahy of his volume of profiles, "A Gallery
of Zionist Profiles," consisting of 27 sketches of colorful pioneers
of Zionism. The publishers probably never thought of it, but one
more sketch would have rounded up the book more fully — a
sketch of Lipsky himself, who is certainly one of the most colorful
figures in American Jewish life,

A Newspaper Boom . . .
Forty-Second Street along New York's Time Square area is
properly called Foreign Newspaper Row. If you want a London,
Paris, Stockholm or Zurich paper, there is where you are sure
to get it. Recently, however, the dealers on Fort-Second Street
have had a boom in the sale of Israeli newspapers, particularly in
the weeks following the outbreak of Egyptian-Israeli hostilities.
Such Israeli papers as Haaretz, Davar, Maariv, Haboker and the
English-language Jerusalem Post are grabbed up as soon as they
arrive. The owner of one of the newspaper stands confided to this
writer that he was flabbergasted by the development. Among the
people swarming to the newspaper kiosks are some who hardly
appear to be giving the impression of being able to distinguish
an Aleph from a Beth as they call out for the Hebrew papers.
At one time Hebrew papers were only a minor item on Foreign
Newspaper Row. Today the demand is larger than the supply.
From the Israeli Press . . .
Ben Gurion and a group of friends were discussing the Suez
crisis when someone mentioned that Nasser had justified his
claim to exclusive control of the canal on the ground that thou-
sands of Egyptians had lost their lives while digging the water-
way. With smiling eyes, the Premier remarked, "If so, the famous
Pyramids belong to Israel."
*
*
About People . . .
Ben Gurion, according to an account in the New York Times,
quoted the original Greek from a classic historian in his recent
appearance before Knesset. Once upon a time American Presi-
dents were able to do the same thing. John Adams was a Greek
scholar and so was Jefferson. James Madison could quote Plato
in the original, and he even.' knew some Hebrew too, but now
Ben Gurion is almost alone among the statesmen of the world
who know their Greek. However, Israel is unique that way.
General Yadin, who led the Israeli battle in the Egyptian fighting,
is by profession not a man of arms but an archaeologist and he
probably knows more about ancient Egypt than Nasser.
When the widow of the late George Orwell was asked to
coin a slogan for prospective tourists to Israel, she replied: "Just
tell them Israel is a country where the women are beautiful and
men are men."
Edward G. Robinson, who will be one of the stars at the
Madison Square Garden Israel Bond Hanukah Fe'stival in New
York, is a great admirer of Ben Gurion and hopes some day
perhaps to portray Israel's architect in a film. Robinson's am-
bition once was the rabbinate. I don't know how well he speaks
Hebrew if at all, but on the few occasions we met him he delighted
the occasion with a fluent Yiddish.
Abba Eban has thinned considerably in the last few weeks.
Whether he is dieting for a slimmer figure or whether the
anxieties of the past few weeks are responsible for it he alone
knows, but the thinning has improved his figure. There can of
course be no conceivable improvement on his speeches. His
speech before the UN General Assembly was a masterpiece in
logic and pathos.
Dr. J. L. Teller, who was recently named by Dr. Nahuni
Goldmann as political secretary of the World Zionist Organiza-
tion, started out in his youth on a literary career. Most readers
of the Anglo-Jewish press know Teller as a brilliant journalist,
essayist, political analyst and author of a most penetrating volume
called "Scapegoat of Revolution," developing the thesis that the
Jew in history has been the scapegoat of all revolutions in history
with the exception of the American revolution. What many of
our readers do not know perhaps is that Teller is the author of
several volumes of verse in Yiddish of uniquely artistic scope.
Only the other day I came across a poem of his called "Twenty
Lines to a Tree," an artistic gem which would do honor to artists
in the richest of tongues.

Fact and Fancy .. .
A State Department official was reported recently to have
made the discovery that Orthodox Jews had contributed nothing
to the advancement of the modern world and that no Jewish
scientists are orthodox. I have had no occasion, writing as I do
in haste against a deadline, to check on Orthodox contributions
to the modern world, but it occurs to me that the gentleman who
would deny orthodoxy to scientists isn't even familiar with the
facts in his own government. 'Had he checked, he would have
learned that Dr. Alvin Radkowsky, chief physicist of the Atomic
Energy Commission, is not only a scientist and orthodox Jew
but so orthodox in fact that he even belongs to the Agudas
Israel of America. Dr. Radkowsky worked on the atomic sub-
marine project with another Jew, Commander Rickover. In fact,
there is' even an association of religious Jewish scientists, most
of them working in the thermo-nuclear field.
Private Farms Offered Americans at Nahariya
Opportunities for American
middle class families to own
and operate farms in one of
Israel's best developed areas are
listed in the booklet, "Middle
Class Farming in Israel," just
issued by the JeWish Agency
for Palestine in New York.
The booklet ,describes Na-
hariya, on the Mediterranean
shore near Haifa, as an ideal
spot for Americans who are
interested in owning a family-
farm and have between
$5,000 and $10,000 to invest.
A typical Nahariya farm con-
sists of 25 dunam (6 112 acres) of
land and a new 3 1/2 room house.
Twenty-five such- farms are now
being laid out and built by
RASSCO, the Rural and Subur-
ban Settlement C o In p a n y,
founded by the Jewish Agency
for Palestine.
The cost of a Nahariya farm
is $12,000 of which $3,500 is re-
size
quired as down payment.
