Children and a may of Life
- By the Oak-Woodser
What one generation had for-
gotten, another - generation is
now attempting to bring back.
Under the name of "Religion
in American Life," a program
is being carried aut by the
major faiths throughout the
United States, mostly through
the media of radio, television
and newspapers to return re-
ligious affiliation to a place of
preeminence in our lives.
More specifically, the three
branches of the Jewish
faith-
.
Orthodox, Conservative and
Reform = are conducting a ,
"Back to the Synagogue"
movement,. in which leading
rabbinic and lay leaders are
participating..
The value of such a campaign
cannot be stressed- enough, for
once we have strayed from the
course,' it is not always - easy
to return. ,
Living as we do in an era
which places tremendous cred-
ence in material gain, it be-
comes difficult to change our
direction — to take a tack in
Our sails and swing about.
New-found conveniences of
the past few decades have
I lessened the burden of our
lives, only to point us in direc-
tions away from those which
gave us the initial faith to exist.
Hanukah truly , has all the
-aspects which lend themselves
to' a marvelous promotional
campaign — pageantry a n d
color, heroics, story telling,
parties, food and gifts.
The many Hanukah work-
shops are designed to bring out
the utmost in festive decora-
tions, in holiday food, in re=
telling the story of the heroism
of the Maccabees and the cruse
of oil that lasted miraculously
for eight ,days.
We will decorate our homes
and have parties for our chil-
dren during the eight days of
Hanukah which begin on Wed-
nesday night. We shalllight oui.
menorahs and each night we
shall give our children presents.
The way to religion nowa-
days then is through our
children — not because we,
ourselves, have found the way
totally, but because we are
now beginning to pause and
think and turn around and go
back—even if 'only for our
children.
By re-living the festival of
Hanukah &wing .•the • coming
week, we will be playing a
part in bringing our _fellow
Jews "Back to the Synagogue."
