The Suburban Community
Thanksgiving —a Day for
Turkey and Giving Thanks
By the Oak-Woodster
We venture the guess • that
this week in the English classes
of our suburban schools, as
well as in hundreds of schools
throughout the • country, one of
the major projects will be the
writing of compositions 0 n
"What Thanksgiving Means to
Me."
Many of the youngsters will
do a little research and come
up with the original celebration
of the festival by the Pilgrims,
others will relate how it • is a
time to give thanks, still more
will tell of last year's family
get-together when they ate so
much turkey they got a tummy
ache.
But of all the millions of
essays written, we'll hazard ,
con opinion that a bare hand-
ful will tell of Thanksgiving
Day spent in actual prayer.
Of course, that's the original
meaning of Thanksgiving—the
offering of prayers to the Al-
mighty for the bountiful harvest
that He has provided during
the past year.
Like so many other signi.
ficant and beautiful holidays,
Thanksgiving has been rele-
gated almost solely to commer-
cialism. An employee with a
day off; an employer grumbling
that he has it off; the emer-
gence of signs proclaiming
"only 27 more shopping days
left to Christmas" and, of
course, the colorful pageantry
arranged by commercial firms
to sell their merchandise.
There will be football games;
if the weather is cold enough
there will be ice skating; the
theaters will come out with
break, celebrate Thanksgiving
with us."
And there is, of c our s e,
nothing wrong with an_y of this
kind of festivity, for Thanks-
giving is a joyous holiday. Only
what vvill have happened to the
thanks in the Thanksgiving?
There is much about us in
the world today that gives us
cause to think: what do we have
to be thankful for? But, there
is so very much more that we
can be grateful about.
When you stand silently in
the football stadium as the band
plays "The Star Spangled
Banner" perhaps you can take
a moment to offer thanks that
you can enjoy watching such
a game.
When you dig into that tur-
key, either at home or out
with the family, you might
remember that in other coun-
tries the very prosperity of
America has made it possible,
through CARE, to send sur-
plus food to peoples in many
parts of the world.
We might all of us remem-
ber, too, that many of our syna-
gogues will be open for special
services of Thanksgiving. Just a
little prayer and a little thought
will go a long way toward re-
establishing the basic thought
behind Thanksgiving Day.

Israel Center of Oak-Woods will
