Northwest Israel Synagogue this week became officially af- filiated with the National Coun- cil of Young Israel, bringing to three the number of affiliated congregations in the Detroit area. Located at 17376 Wyoming, the congregation will be known in the future as Young Israel of Northwest Detroit. The other two are Young Israel "of De- troit, with a center on Dexter and another on Linwood, and Young Israel of Oak-Woods. Historically, Northwest Israel grew out of the Young Israel movement when a number of members of the. Dexter branch moved to the Northwest section. Services were first held in the Bagley school, and, in 1952, they moved into the present building, which has since been enlarged. Rabbi Leo Y. Goldman is spiritual leader of the congrega- tion, a post he has held since 1953. Under his guidance, North- west Israel h a -s _ grown t o a membership of 100 families, has a Sisterhod and numerous youth groups. Since its inception, the synagogue has housed a branch of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah. Continuing on as officers of the congregation are Samuel. S.
