Thirty-five new sponsors, each
enrolled in the ranks of the
Israel Bond Organization of De-
troit as purchasers of $1,000
bonds, helped swell the total of
bond sales to $106,(}00 at the
luncheon at the home of. Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph Katchke, 1'7220
Pontchartrain, Wednesday after-
noon.
The event was featured by the
presence of Orna Porat, one of
Israel's leading actresses, 1956
star of the international Festival
de Paris.
Mrs. Katchke presided, and

the chairman of the Israel Bond
Women's Division , Mrs. Charles
Milan, announced $10,000 bond
purchases by herself and Mrs.
Nathan R. Epstein, who became
trustees. A 0,000 bond pur-
chase was made by Mrs. Reuben
Shaye.
Announcement of the list of
new sponsors was - made by Mrs.
Philip Helfman, sponsors' chair-
man.
Miss Porat described her ex-
periences in Israel. Born in a
Christian family in Cologne,
Germany, she worked in the
underground against Nazism and
met her future husband there.

They settled in Israel soon
thereafter and Miss Porat be-
came active in the defense and
liberation movements.
Commending the women for
their efforts in Israel's behalf ,
Miss Porat told the gathering
that Israel's secret weapon is
her economic strength. She said
she wilt take back to Israel with
her messages of great faith and
devotion to their fellow-Jews on
the part of American Jewry.
Describing the influence of the
theater in Israel, Miss Porat en-
tertained the group with an in-
terpretation of "St. Joan's
Pledge to Freedom."

Purely Commentary:

'A Plea for Cooperation'—Still Timely

The Christian Science Monitor carried an editorial, in its
issue of Oct. 22, under the heading "A Plea for Cooperation."
It appeared an entire week before Israel's military move to
destroy the Fedayeen nests in Egypt. The editorial must not be
viewed as superfluous because of its time element. Its message
is as valid today as it was then. Read the editorial and judge

for yourself:

Few persons would expect to hear of such a concept as
"constructive Arab nationalism" from the world leader of
.Zionism, yet that is exactly the image evoked by Dr. Nahum
Goldmann, president of the World Zionist Organization, in
Houston, Texas, a few days ago.
He . appealed to the big powers to initiate a serious and
determined peace effort between Israel and the Arab states,
and averred, • "There is evidence in some quarters of the Arab
world of a groping toward a more _constructive nationalism."
_ These gropings certainly are not confined to any one Arab
country, but they do seem more exemplified in the program
of Iraq to use its oil revenues in ways that build up the
economy of the country than in the explosive action of Egypt
to nationalize the Suez Canal.
It may seem quixotic to speak of peace when war appears
to threaten along the Israeli-Jordanian border and when Egypt
and Iraq - vie for influencejn Jordan. Yet Dr. Goldmann says,
"Peace between Israel and the Arab states would open the
way to real cooperation between the Arabs and the Jews in
converting the Near East into a region of plenty, of potentials
utilized, dreams realized, prophetic principles applied in life."
And that is what must come someday.
We hold fast to the view that cooperation between Jews
and Arabs is as possible today as it was prior to the establish-
ment of Israel. Contrary to the views attained by President
Eisenhower from misleading sources that there is an age-old
enmity between Jews and Moslems (or Arabs), we must remind
him again that the traditional relationship between the two
cousin-peoples is a friendly one._ It can become friendly again,
provided a serious effort is made to attain peace. The next move
must be that of the world's great powers, through the United
Nations if ,possible, together with the Arab nations. Then
"prophetic principles" again will be "applied in life."

Detroit Christians' Statement on Middle East

Under the leadership of the Rev. William B. Sperry, a
Detroit group, Christians for Peace in the Middle East, has
expressed its concern over the happenings in the Middle East
and has proposed a program for action.
The clarity and impartiality with which these clergymen
have offered their program has earned for it serious attention.
Their statement urges that "the UN Security Council should
muster the moral courage to:
"1. require immediate withdrawal of the Israeli, French =and
British forces; request the Moslem nations and Israel to get to-
gether immediately around the •conference table to negotiate
a permanent peace settlement;
- "2. require the Egyptians and other Moslem nations to dis-
band forthwith the Fedayeen suicidal units which have sown
destruction within Israel;
"3. require Moslem nations as members of the United Na-
tions to accept the status of Israel as an independent nation or
be subject to U. N. sanctions.
"4. dispatch an international police force to the Middle East
to compel a cease fire if necessary, and to maintain order for
whatever period may be necessary; and
"5 require a prompt end to the land and sea boycotts against

Cohn said. "Telegrams have
been sent to each of the rabbis
in the area urging them to make
appeals from their pulpits for
an all out effort from our com-
munity in Israel's behalf."
Groups participating in this
effort include Hadassah, Pioneer
Women, American Jewish Con-
gress, Jewish National Fund,
Congregational Sisterhoods,
Jewish War Veteran s, Bnai
Brith, fraternal orders - and
Landsmanschaften groups, Zion-
ist Organization of America,
and the Labor Zionist Organiza-
tion.
Emphasizing the importance
of making Sunday's Action
Day for Israel an overwhelm-
ing success, Cohn stated: "Is-
rael needs economic strength- '
ening now more than ever.
Everything that Israel means
to us is in the balance. The
future dignity of world Jewry
is in her hands . . . and ours.
We must all unite on Action
Day to make available imme-
diately, to Israel, maximum
investment in her economy.
Those who can volunteer their
services as workers on Sun-
day, should be at the Labor
Zionist Institute on Nov. 11
at 9 a.m. For those who can-
not participate as workers, be
prepared to greet a volunteer
at your home on Action Day
for Israel with a check for the
purchase of an Israel, Bond."

Of the points, and modifications are in order in this program.
But the sincerity and lack of prejudice which marks this state-
ment commends it for consideration. Appended to these pro-
posals are "Some Facts to be Remembered." Those who have
been blinded by false Arab propaganda should study them care-
fully. Here they are:
"1. Israel Was Created by the U. N.: The state of Israel was
established by the United Nations in 1948 in response to the
conscience of the world.
. "2. Moslem Nations Defied the United Nations: The Moslem
countries refused to accept the U. N. action in_ creating -Israel as
a self-governing nation in 1948. Instead, within hours, they
launched a war against Israel and the Arab League ordered
all Arabs to leave their homes in Israel, to slip into Moslem
territory. Israel pleaded with the Arabs to remain. The Moslem
nations attacked in May 1948 and were defeated. On February
24, 1949, the U. N. negotiated an Armistice whose terms were
`. . . to facilitate the transition from the present truce to per-
manent peace in Palestine.' But Moslem leaders have refused
to sit down with Israeli leaders since that date.
"3. Israel Tried to Repay Arabs: Israel offered to negotiate
a money settlement with Arab refugees for abandoned property
in Israel, but this offer was rejected by Moslem leaders. In
addition, Israel freed the bank accounts blocked during the Arab
war, a move which the Moslems have not reciprocated for the
more than 350,000 Jewish refugees from Moslem countries. Even
today, 180,000 Arabs continue to live in Israel enjoying full
political and economic rights and a standard of living approxi-
mating that of most Israelis. Nazareth is almost 90% Arab, and
six Arabs are members of the Israeli Parliament.
"4. Arabs Neglect Own Refugees: We feel a profound con-
cern for the Arab refugees who are still living in undescribable
conditions primarily in Jordan, but it must be recognized in all
fairness, that these refugees are there largely as the result of
Arab appeals for them to flee Israel. Israel cannot be held
entirely responsible for the plight of these refugees. Moslem
nations have made almost no effort to integrate refugees into
their own vast territories and have failed to take advantage of
offers of help and economic assistance from the United' States
and the United Nations."
These are old-established facts. But they were withheld
from view and our' American representatives at the United
Nations failed to take them seriously when we pleaded for action
to compel the Arabs to talk peace with Israel. Now, in an hour
of international crisis, the U. S. Delegate to the United Nations,
Henry Cabot Lodge, finally proposed a resolution for a move
by the UN in the direction of peace. It is not too late to talk
peace, but the ridiculousness of our Government's position is
emphasized by the blindness and delays of the past. The action
of the Detroit clergymen is wiser than that of our UN repre-
sentatives.

Whom Can You Fool—and How Long?

The Arab Information Center, in a series of advertisements,
one in the Saturday Review, asks several legitimate questions
and then offers to send literature on "The Bible Lands," listing
Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya and Syria.
Is it possible that there are some people who can be fooled
by such propaganda into believing that "Bible Lands" exclude
Israel? How long will Christians fall for such nonsense, unless
they abandon and remove from their faith the Christ who
stemmed from the People of Israel in the Land of Israel? But
when you recall the Nazi claims that Jesus was an Aryan, you
acquire a better understanding of attempts to distort history.

heard on Nov. 1, when more
than 100 men and women
jammed the offices of the De-
troit Israel Bond Organization,
at 2200 David Stott Building.
They were assembled on very
short notice to hear nation-
wide closed circuit telephone
messages from Washington and
New York.
Ambassador E b a n, w h
spoke simultaneously to simi
lar groups assembled through=
out the United States, empha-
sized that Israel's action was
an act of self-defense. He
pointed out that Israel had no
choice but to eliminate the
bases from which, the daily
pillages and murdering par-
ties were emanating. Israel's
very life and economic exist-
ence was at stake, he said,
and to wait would mean cer-
tain strangulation..
Meier Sherman, Israel's Eco-
nomic Minister to • the U. S.,
then spokes regarding Israel's
action in the past few days.
"What price mtist Israel pay
for the favor of public opin-
ion?" he asked. "The Arab at-
tacks are without end and un-
dermining our very existence.
Should there be no condemna-
tion for the taking of Jewish
lives? HOW much can the peo-
ple of Israel be expected to
stand? The forces in the Sinai
Peninsula have but one mission
.. to eliminate the bases from
which the Arab thrusts into Is-
rael are emanating. When this
is accomplished, the defense
forces will retire to Israel."
Dr. Joseph Schwartz, execu-
tive vice-president of the Israel
Bond Organization, spoke to the
groups assembled and read the
N. Y. Times editorial which em-
phasized the ridiculousness of
permitting Nasser to pose as
the innocent victim of aggres-
sion.
Dr. Schwartz stated that
everything Israel means to
world Jewry is at stake 'now
and that it is up to all to see
that Israel is here to stay and
to prosper in freedom and in
peace.
Dr. Schwartz emphasized that
Israel Bond campaign efforts
are now on an action basis, that
everyone must go beyond what
is expected of them. "This is
the time to organize for wider
coverage, enroll more volun-
teers. Now, more than ever,
cash for Israel is most urgent.
We must furnish maximum and
immediate economic plasma to
keep the Jewish State .strong,"
he declared.
