On the Record

Triumph for Douglas

By NATHAN ZIPRIN

No Advice Needed

MELVYN DOUGLAS

Melvyn Douglas, the distin-
guished movie and stage star, is
adding glory to his acting suc-
cesses in his role as Henry
Drummond—an impersonation of
the late Clarence Darow—in
"Inherit the Wind," the play
that depicts the famous Scopes
Trial of 30 years ago.
The title of the play comes
from Proverbs 11:29:
He that troubleth his own

house shall inherit the wind;
And the foolish shall be ser-
vant to the wise of heart

"Inherit the Wind". is the
season's greatest triumph. It
remains here, at the Lafayette,
with Douglas in the lead, for
another week.

Adv.

There is only one conceivable case in which Jews might
cast what may be called a "Jewish vote." That could happen only
when one of the political candidates has offended the Jewish
community, and even in that case a vote for his opponent could
not be considered a "Jewish vote" but an expression of outrage
and- moral courage against a man undeserving of public office.
The "Jewish vote" is a myth of the politicians and the
vicious, with- each, of course, having different aims. On the
whole the effort to secure the "Jewish vote" has not developed
any striking situations in this campaign. However, there has been
one disconcerting development in my own state, New York,
but not of the making of the political parties. In all the salesman
ship displays I have heard, not a single responsible candidate
made a specific bid for the "Jewish vote" as such. The exceptbn
was a New York sheet whose name I have deliberately omitted.
This tabloid,. with probably hundreds of thousands of Jewish
readers, urging support of Attorney General Javits over his
Democratic opponent Wagner in the senatorial race, boldly
and impudently theorized that when a Jew and non-Jew (such
as the candidates) both claim friendship for Israel, the Jewish
vote must go to the Jewish candidate on the claimed ground
that a non-Jew cannot be "more sympathetic toward the Jewish
homeland than a person with age-old Jewish traditions in his
heart."
The burden of this piece is not political advice, but advice
of another kind. Keep Jews and the Jew and goy issue out of
public debate, whether the issue is candidates or one of trans-
cendent importance. The logic of that thesis is to divide the
electorate on the basis of religion. It is the preachment of
'divisiveness and the negation of that cohesiveness without which
people of different faiths and different colors cannot live in
brotherliness and in confidence in each other despite all other
areas of differences. Jews do not vote for Jews or against non-
Jews. /Their trust in candidates is determined by factors other
than variance in faith. To suggest that a non-Jew cannot be
as sympathetic to the Jewish homeland as a Jew is travesty and
a dark cloud upon the sincerity of the millions of goyim
throughout the world with professions of friendship for Jews
and Israel.

The Jewish community of Michigan is bracing for a legal
spectacle whose outcome will be' carefully wathced by Jewish
communities throughout the country having a similar problem.
The issue of the legal battle is—din and law and the right of
a majority to impose religious change upon a minority.
It _all started some three years ago in Mt. Clemens, a Detroit
suburb, when the town's shul officials voted to have mixed
seating, a radical departure from Orthodox practice. The action
was taken by a majority vote, but the stubborness of one man
has thrown the issue into the courts, where a Christian judge
will face the burden of decision and a Christian legal firm the
chore of defending the Orthodox position. The sole hold-out, or
at least the most stubborn one, was elderly Reb Boruch who
refused to vote against the proposal on the ground that to do so
would be ipso facto recognition of the principle that such an issue
can be decided by a vote. Secondly he maintained that a din,
traditional Jewish law, was not subject to mutation or change
by ruling of majorities. Reb Boruch's first move was to secure
a temporary injunction which stopped the board's implementation
of its decision. Now the case is moving close to the top of the
court's calendar, with a gallery of leading Orthodox rabbis
expected to appear as witnesses, An unique feature of the trial
will be a brief by the Christian lawyers for the Orthodox
plaintiff claiming a precedent for Reb Boruch's position in a case
involving a similar development in a North Carolina church.
The North Carolina church ruled against the majority on the
ground that basic religious concepts cannot be amended by vote.
