Israel Statistics Show
High Life Expectancy

Nursing School Starts Classes

, JERUSALEM (JTA)—Women
in Israel now have an average
life expectancy of 70—while the
average life-span for their
menfolk is 67, according to the
latest compilation of Israel's
statistics.
The figures on life expec-
tancy, and a host of other statis-
tics, were revealed at a press
conference here by Prof. R.
Bacchi, director of the Central
Bureau of Statistics.
Among the other facts re-
vealed in the 300-page volume
are that more people now live
in the Negev than ever before,
that kibbuti population is almost
static and that there are more
"sabras" (native-born Israelis)
than ever.

Student practical nurses RUDOLPH BARAN and ABIG-
MEW A. METELSKI assist Sinai Hospital patient WM.
GOODMAN with his dressing. Baran, a tool grinder before
he entered the Shapero School, is the only male student in a
class of 48.
Shapero School of Nursing's first student practical nurses
came on the floors of Sinai Hospital last week to undertake
their first practical work.
The 47 women and one male student came into the Jewish
hospital's fourth and fifth floor wards in groups of 12, accom-
panied by two instructors. The nurses practised early morning
care of patients—feeding, dressing, bathing, taking tempera=
tures, helping with personal needs, etc.

Jews in Communist China Reported
Asking Emigration Visas to Israel

LONDON (JTA) — A report
on the situation of Jews in
Communist China was presented
at a meeting of the Board of
Deputies of British Jews. It was
reported that there is increasing
evidence that the Arab states,
especially Egypt, are developing
their attacks on Israel into a
general attack on Jews every-
where in a manner strongly
reminiscent of Nazi propaganda.
The report' on the situation
of the Jews in China was pre-
pared on the basis of news from
British* delegations which re-
cently. visited China. The' ma-
jority of the Jews there, the
report said, desire to emigrate
to Israel, but are experiencing
difficulties in • obtaining exit
visas. The Board is taking
steps which, it is hoped, will
remove these difficulties.
• It also was reported that in
view of the widespread concern

Reform Ask Russians
to Abolish Anti-Semitism

. NEW YORK (JTA) — The
•Union of American Hebrew
Congregation, at its four-day
meeting here, adopted a resolu-
tion asking the Soviet Union to
correct "the cruel mistreatment
of its Jewish citizens, • including
the cultural and religious geno-
cide to which Jews in the Soviet
Union have been subjected" by
matching with deeds its inten-
sive and obvious bid to world
public opinion through their
repudiation of Stalin and re-
habilitation of some of Stalin's
victims.
The resolution asked the State
Department to intensify its ef-
forts "to persuade the Soviet
Union to abolish the anti-Semi-
tism which made Stalin's re-
gime abhorrent.'
Another resolution called on
the State Department to end all
the diminution and denial of
the rights of every American
citizen in so many parts of the
Arab world and asked the State
Department to abandon the
stubborn and hypocritical re-
fusal to sell arms to Israel while
allowing others to bear this
burden.
