Cincinnati Scientist
Develops Oral Vaccine
as Polio-Preventative

By HENRY B. STERN
NEW YORK - Just around
the corner from the Wall Street
financial district is a narrow
street which many consider to
be the stamp collecting capital
of the world.
On Nassau Street one finds
many street level stamp shops
as well as stamp outfits in al-
most every building. On this
street the collector can find vir-
tually any stamp or album that
he might want. Youngsters just
starting in the hobby as well as
philatelists with thousands of
dollars can be found in the Nas-
sau Street shops.
The exhibit cases and store
windows here give the interest-
ed passerby so many things to
look at. Covers (i.e., stamps on
postally used envelopes) are

prominently displayed. Postage

stamps of Israel, the United Na-
tions and, to some extent, the
Iron Curtain countries are also
featured in the displays.
Nassau Street dealers, like
good stamp dealers everywhere,
are more than merely purvey-
ors of postage stamps. Most
stamp shop personnel will spend
time explaining- some fine point
of philately to a beginning col-
lector. The person who drops
by with a question is as cordial-
ly treated as one who drops by
with money to spend.
True, the great FIPEX stamp
show at New York's Coliseum
is over. Yet on Nassau .Street
an active "stamp fair" contin-
ues every week, Monday
through Friday.

Writer W. Mankowitz in
Two 'Atlantic' Articles

"Atlantic Monthly" for Oc-
tober features two articles con-
cerning the British Jew Wolf
Markowitz. A short story, "Too
Much Man," by Mankowitz,
"cherishes every bit of cockney."
Second is a sizeable discussion
by John Metcalf, dramatic critic
of ,the "London Sunday Times,"
writing on Mankowitz as a new
and widely discussc: English
author.
Mankowitz, who graduated
from Cambridge University, has
recently written, the novel, "Old
Soldiers Never Die," having
"established himself as . . . con-
siderably more than a facile
genre writer with promise," says
Metcalf. The thirty-two-year-old
Mankowitz has also written "A
Kid for Two Farthings," a film
recently shown in Detroit, and
the play, "The Bespoke Over-
coat," which as a film won first
prize at the Venice Film Festi-
val last year. Besides his hu-
morous articles for "Punch" and
other fiction, he controls, as
scholar and vender, a great
share of the Wedgwood market
in London.
