Israel Faces Rising Banger4 at ITN and on
Borders; Ben-Gurion Gets Confidence Vote

(Copyright, 1956, By The Jewish
Telegraphic Agency, Inc.)

The threat of war, already
ominous in the wake of a bloody
chain of Arab provocations and
Israeli reprisals, receded this
week after a report here from
Amman that the newer—and
graver—threat of an Iraqi troop
movement into the shaky King-
dom of Jordan had been post-
poned.
Iraqi troops, "for the time
being," will not enter onto Jor-
danian soil but will be stationed
along the Jordan-Iraqi border,
ready to move in the event of
an attack by Israel, according
to a Jordanian Government
spokesman.
A new f a ctor appeared
when Syria, closest ally of
Col. Nasser of Egypt, stepped
into- the picture. The Syrian
envoy in Amman announced
that "Syrian heavy weapons
have started to f l o w into
Jordan." He described the
weapons as the gift of the
Syrian people to the Jordan-
ian Army and National Guard.
British Royal Air Force jet
fighters arrived in Jordan to
reinforce British air units al-
ready stationed there, it was re-
ported from Amman. The dis
patches said that a British Em-
bassy spokesman in the Jordan
capital would not say how many
planes were expected.

ported that in reaffirming Pres-
ident Eisenhower's pledge of

any victim of aggression in ;the

sides that any military move

that the UN probe of the Qual-

decisions indicated "clear and
f i r m lines" leading to "con-
demnation of all acts of
violence."
Mr. Hammarskjold's letter to
the Council was a preface to
a new report from Maj. 'E. L. M.
Burns, chief of staff of the UN
Truce Supervision Organization.
The report brought the UN's
final count of casualties result-
ing from the Qualqilya action,
showing that the Jordanians suf-
fered 48 dead while the Israelis
lost 18 lives. -
The report could be construed
also as placing all of the Israel-
Arab attacks and counter-at-
tacks of the last 21 months into
persepctive, thus applying Mr.
Hammarskjold's requested con-
demnation of • "all acts of vio-
lence" against the Arab states
as well as against Israel.
Gen. B ur n s informed the
Council that in the 21 months
ending September 31, 1956,
Israel-Arab fighting along
various borders resulted in
in a
total of 617 dead and - 915 wound-
ed. Of that total, Israel suffered
121 dead and 632 wounded;
, while the Arab casualties to-
talled 751, including 496 dead.
Of the Qualqilya raid, he said:
"The casualties resulting from
this incident are the highest
since the Gaza incident in April,
1956."
While Gen. Burns' report
dealt in detail with the Qual-
qilya attack and included over-
all Israel-Arab casualty figures
for the year of 1955 and the
first nine months of this year,
it made only indirect reference
to Israel's latest policy of boy-

a common concern for preserva-
tion of the status quo. Mrs. Meir
also reportedly took up the
Iraqi troop question in a con-
versation with British Ambas-
sador Sir John Nicholls, who had
just returned from home leave.
