By HARRY MAXMAN
Can I give 9ny heart laughter
So soon after tears?
Yesterday my child died—
I know the sun still appears,
And rivers are flowing,
And flowers do bloom,
But yesterday 171y child died,
Did the earth not have room?

HERE'S ISRAEL !

"Let no American imagine

that Zionism is inconsistent

with patriotism. Multiple loy-

alties are objectionable only if

they are inconsistent. A man is
a better citizen of the United
States for being also a loyal
citizen of his state and of his
city; for being loyal to his
family and his profession or
trade; for being loyal to his
college or lodge. Every Irish-
American who contributed to-
wards advancing • home rule
was a better man and a better
American for the sacrifice he

made. Every American Jew

who aids in advancing the
Jewish settlement in Palestine,
though he feels that neither
he nor his descendants will
ever live there, will likewise
be a better man and a better
American for doing so."

"Major obligation of our
people is to continue uninter-
ruptedly their efforts to main-
tain and strengthen the State
of Israel which has so magnifi-
cently performed the heavy
tasks which the Jewish people
placed upon it. It has ingath-
ered hundreds of thousands of
our refugees for whom the
world has no room; it has in-
tegrated them into the life a
the new State; it is providing
a home for tens of thousands
who are still coming into it
annually; it has built many
institutions of culture, health
and education of which world
Jewry can justly be proud."

Dr. Abba Hillel Silver.

—Justice Brandeis.

"From what I have seen, I would say
that it is going to take more than the
Arab economic blockade, frontier inci-
dents and the resentful ill-will of the
Arab world to make the Jewish people
abandon fulfillment of the centuries-old
aspiration to have a place they can call
home. . . . In its spirit, its faith in the
future, its vitality and rate of progress at
which it is developing itself as a nation.
it is outmatched by no country in the
world."

—William Randolph Hearst, Jr.

"Even under their heavy burdens,
Israel's people do not know fear or de-
spair. . . . We are determined to lend
them the strength that we have in abun-
dance and that they so urgently need. It
is to the eternal credit of our brethren in
the State of Israel that they have come
so far in so little time. Struggling val-
iantly against tremendous odds, they have
carved a modern country out of a wilder-
ness. The homeless, the oppressed, the
weary have made a new life for them-
selves and their children. Because of

them, we can hold our heads higher,

proud that we share in their heritage
and their accomplishments•"
