Candidates Flock to File
for Huntington Woods' Race
By the Oak-Woodser
A record number of Hunting-
ton Woods residents have cir-
culated petitions placing their
names on the ballot in the Nov.
6 race for seats on the City
Commission.
Prior to this year's election,
states Fred L. Yockey, Hunting-
ton Woods City Manager, there
was little more than routine in-
terest shown by citizens in seek-
ing public -office.
However, when the deadline
for filing petitions arrived last
week, two men were running
for mayor, seven residents were
listed as candidates for the two,
t*o-year terms as City Com-
missioner, another five were
running for one unexpired one-
year term, eight were candi-
dates for Justice of the Peace
and one filed for Constable.
According to Yockey, there
are three likely reasons for the
unusual attention being given
this year's city election. It is a
non-partisan race.
These, he said, were:
1. the fact that there were
so many openings on the City
CoMmission;
2. Interest in the problem of
flooded basements and the 12-
sewer relief project;
and
3. A number of zoning dif-
ficulties which • had been
raised in the past year.
While ordinarily, only two
posts would be voted upon at
this time, the resignation of J.
Nelson Brown, • who had one
Year left of his term, has created
a third opening.
In addition, Commissioner
Walter Koch, a veteran in local
government, will not be seeking
re-election. He is moving out of
the city. That leaves incumbent
-Leo J. Elbert as the only Corn-
mis§ioner seeking office.
Filing for office are:
Mayor: David It Calhoun (in-
cumbent) and Louis J. Gordon.
Commission (2-year term):
Leo .1. Elbert, Robert A. Len-
nox, Harry S. Benjamin, Jr., G.
Allen Briggs, Stanford A. Wal-
lace, Earl S. Hordes and Donald
Katz;
Commission (1-year unex-
pired term): Samuel L. Travis,
Howard C. Wessels, Robert F.
Phillips, Maxwell M. Lowe and
Gordon R. Bryant.
Justice of the Peace (4-year
term): Oscar A. Gorelick, Ralph
Delaney, George B. Wells, Al-.
bert L. Lieberman, A. Lewis
Fineberg, Bernard Rosner, Sid-
ney E. Pollick and James Ren-
frew.
Ernest Robitaille is the only
candidate for Constible:
Yockey, who has been with
the city since 1951, advancing
from administrative assistant to
City Manager, says that while
Huntington Woods has solved its
water problems (last summer
was the first in which the-re
were no problems of pressure),
there is still the troublesome
sewerage situation, the same
faced by other South Oakland
County communities..
City sewers, he says, will con-„
tain and were planned for 10-
year storms, but not for the 20-
year storms which have hit the
area with so much fiequency of
late. The new 12-Town project,
he feels, will alleviate the flood-
ing conditions.
As it is, through study of the
flood conditions, the city • now
knows which areas flood first,
which streets in a specified area,
when they will flood and how
much water will back up
through the sewer. Corrective
- measures thus have been taken
where possible, Yockey said.
A number of zoning problems
have created interest among
residents during the past year,
he said, pointing particularly to
property in the fringe area
along Woodward, was zoned for
single homes, but was defeated.
It is now being considered for
professional property„- with a
number of commercial firms ex-
pected to fight the move.
Other areas of dispute are the
11- Coolidge and 10 - Coolidge
sections where two 20-foot par-
cels of land are owned privately.
Although deed restrictions
call for single-family homes,
it is difficult for these restric-
tions to hold up in court,
Yockey explained. A store has
been built on one of the 20-
foot sites, while the city is
still attempting to negotiate
for the second.
The Nov. 6 election will be
watched eagerly by the 9,000
citizens of Huntington Woods.
It's the most election excitement
they've had there- for years.

Find Rare Israeli Tomb
-The unopened roya• tomb of
an early invader of Egypt, has
been discovered by Hebrew Uni-
versity archaeologists, according
to a Religious News Service
report. The tomb, unearthed in
Tel Hazor, northern Galilee,
appears to be of the Hyksos
period of Israeli "shepherd
kings," who conquered Egypt
"without a blow," according to
historian Josephus.
The archaeologists, Gen. Yigal
Yadin, former Chief' of Staff of
the Israeli Army, and Prof.
Jean Perrot, discovered a cir-
cular staircase leading into a
rock tunnel behind a monu-
mental arch known only in
royal tombs.
The Hyksos ruled Egypt for
511 years, beginning about 1685
B.C.E. About 240,000 Hyksos
then migrated back to Judea,
where they built Jerusalem.
Records of this period are rare,
few archaeological traces having
ever been found. •
After welcothing the guests,
Mrs. Joe Ellis, president, will
briefly outline some of the uses
to which Honor Roll funds are
applied:
Dr: Maurice Reizen will serve
as master of ceremonies at an
intermission show, which will
highlight "Our Fair Lady," a
parody of the Broadway hit.
In the cast are Mesdames
Laurence Becker, Joseph Beck:
erman, Lawrence Collins, Shel-
don Ellison, Maurice Reizen and
Abel Selburn, with Mrs. Ber-
nard Black at the piano. A
vocal trio consisting of Bert
Gordon, Lee Goren and Harold
Roland, husbands of Chapter
members, also will entertain.
