The "Symposium on Our
Community's Educational Aims"
in your Oct. 12 issue was inter;
esting and informative: 1: en-
joyed especially the remarks
made byy Rabbi Joseph Elias of
Yehivath Beth Yehuda regard-
ing the concept of "d unified
community school system": May
I inform the esteemed Rabbi
that I have written on the topic
of "unity vs. uniformity". time
and again. The section "An In-
stitution of the Future" in my
work "Jewish Communal Insti-
tutions in Detroit" is a study of
thiS very problem: -
RS only salUtion 'in Our com-
munity, as I see it, is the crea-
tion of a democratic central 'edu-
cational agency which- would
represent all school systems and
whose governing body would be
democratically elected. Only
such a body could put into ef-
fect the "nine-Point" educational
program" suggested in the sym-
posium by Rabbi Morris Adler.
Incidentally, I was surprised
that- no mention was made by
the participants in the sym-
posium of the aims , of the Di-
rectors' Council of the Jew-
ish Religious Schools of Metro-
politan Detroit with which all
loeai and suburban= schools are
affiliated. Therefore, may I here
include some of the Council's
aims: •
1. To promote close co opera-
tion among religibus sehoolS.
2. To consult on curricular
and administrative problems.
p. To exchange ideas relating
to school practice, a _ dministra-
tion and personnel.
4. To serve as a clearing house
for curricular 'materials and
programs.
5. To stimulate the teachers to
continually • increase their
