Year, and More to Come . . .
When the monthly Jewish Digest appeared a year ago it
was a new journalistic venture whose success could not be
predicted. Now that it has completed its first 12 months of pub-
lication, it is good to report that the Jewish Digest has happily
found wide acceptance in Jewish circles in this country and in
many lands abroad. As a medium of communication which con-
denses the exciting story of the Jewish scene, the Jewish Digest
fills a very useful need. By culling the best and most interesting
material about things Jewish from Jewish and general literature,
the publication holds up a bright mirror to the Jewish scene
without grinding any axe or advocating any single point of view.
As the Jewish Digest moves into the second year, we take the
occasion of extending hearty congratulations and a Yasher Koach
to the publishers and editors.

A

City of Hope Million Dollar
Club Headed by Al Winnick

The City of Hope Million
Dollar Club, which is being
spear-headed by the Detroit
Business Men's Group, is
headed by Al Winnick.

Among the first to join this
group and give it the impetus
needed was "Col." David I. Saf-
Ar, eighty year old president of
the Cadroy Management Co.

Only A Go-Getter Like COBO

AL WINNICK
Mr. Winnick, owner of the
Albert Building Co., who joined
the Detroit Business Men's
Group several years ago, has
become a very active and ar-
dent worker and contributor to
this greatest of humanitarian
causes—the support and main-
tainance of the National Medi-
cal Center at Duarte, Califor-
nia, a free non-sectarian hos-
pital dedicated to causes of re-
search and curing catastrophic
diseases and providing the
training of doctors and tech-
nicians in an atmosphere where
race or creed does not matter.
Mr. Winnick is also member-
ship chairman of the Business
Men's Group.
Because of the ever increasing
demand for admittance of non-
paying patients and the cost of
the extensive research program
necessitating more and more
money, the Million Dollar Club
was created. A "brain child" of
David Weinstein, regional cam-
paign director of the City of
Hope, it is expected that
branches of the club will spring
up in all communities where
City of Hope groups are func-
tioning.
As evidenced by the response
in Detroit where already
eighteen members have joined,
immediate results thruout the
country are eminent. Any indi-
vidual—and that is open to the
public, not merely confined to
Business Men's Group members
—firm or organization (other
than City of Hope groups) who
contributes $1,000 or more is
eligible for membership.

COL. DAVID I. SAFFIR
"Col." Saffir joined the Bus-
iness Men's Group exactly one
year a g o after Mrs. Adolph
Kessler brought the workings of
the National Medical Center to
his attention through Samuel
Goiter's book, "And this is the
City of Hope." "Col." Saffir, up-
on joining the group, contribut-
ed $500 yearly for life. Several
months later, expressing the
desire to meet Samuel Goiter,
author, director and founder of
the Medical Center, a confer-
ence was called in Detroit at
which Mr. Goiter attended and
a check for $10,000 was again
presented by the "colonel".
Immediately following the
announcement of the forming of
the Million Dollar Club, "Col."
Saffir raised his yearly contri-
bution which initiated him into
this circle of "big league givers."
"Col." Saffir is associated in
the Cadroy Co. with Barney
Smith, Theodore Schwartz, Ben
B. Fenton, and his son, Milton
J. Saffir.
