Send Greetings to Pope Pius
on .80th Birthday, Sunday

Eightieth birthday greetings
were sent to Pope Pius by Dr.
Maurice N. Eisendrath, presi-
dent of the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, parent
body of the nation's Reform
temples, in commemoration of
the birthday celebration being
held Sunday, at New York's
Polo Grounds by the Holy
Name Sobiety..
In the letter Dr: Eisendrath
praises the pontiff for keeping
"high the banners of humani-
tarianism, compassion and equi-
ty." The- Jewish religious lead-
er also expressed support in
what he called the Pope's de-
nunciation of "racialism as a
sin" and in pleas for "the wider
and fairer distribution of the
fruits of human toil."

station is privately owned, but
that one of the principal owners
is Harold McMichael, one of the
last British High Commissioners
in Palestine before the Man-
date was abandoned. Although
Cyprus broadcasts constantly
tell the Arabs that Israel is
their enemy, the British Gov-
ernment which has put the
island under military rule,
makes no attempt to interfere
with these broadcasts, Dr. Gold-
mann. said. "We assume that an
island under British rule could
be censored by the British,"
he added.

The "green belt" will extend
more than a mile on each side
of the main- Jerusalem-Tel Aviv
road and in the direction of
Ein Karem. The trees will be
planted on rocky, hilly terrain
unfit for either agriculture or
home building, Some 250,000
trees will be planted on this
project, one-third during the
coming rainy season. - .
The first trees in the "Stoll-
man Grove," a part of the
Jerusalem "green belt"- were
planted at a ceremony attended
by members of the Israel Cabi-
net and of the Jewish Agency
executive. The grove is named
in honor of the Stollman fam-
ily of Detroit.

2,000 Year-Old Stone Goes
into Washington Temple
WASHINGTON (JTA) — A
stone used 2,000 years ago in
the Wall of Agrippa, one of the
defensive walls surrounding an-
cient Jerusalem, was dedicated
as the cornerstone of a new
$500,000 building of Temple
Sinai, a Reform synagogue.

The problem of permitting
Jewish emigration to Israel does
not exist in Tunisia,, he said.
In Morocco emigration was
stopped last July, but after the
intervention of Jewish organi-
zations the Moroccan Govern-
ment permitted in recent weeks'
8,000 Jews to leave the Casa-
blanca emigration camp and
proceed to Israel. This emigra-
tion was concluded last week
when the last group in Casa-
blanca embarked for Israel.
With regard to further emi-
gration, Dr. Goldmann reported,
the Moroccan government has
made it clear that it will not
permit any "collective emigra-
tion" bit Jews "will be allowed
to emigrate on an individual
basis. ,

Touching upon the Jews in
the East European countries,
Dr. Goldmann said that the sit-
uation of 3;000,000 Jews in these
countries constitutes the most
vital problem for Jewry today.
The Jews in -these countries do
not suffer from anti-Semitism,
but—especially in the Soviet
Uni&—they have no opportun-
ity to live a Jewish life al-
though the majority of Jews
there still consider themselves
Jewish.

Ninth Oil-Bearing Well
Discovered at Heletz Site
TEL AVIV (JTA)—Heletz II,
another well sunk in Israel's
only producing oil field, cut into
an oil-bearing strata. This is the
ninth well to actually come in.
Five of the nine are already pro-
ducing oil and the remainder
are non-productive until pump-
ing equipment can be obtained.

Rabbi Moses Lehrman will
preach on "How to Be a Good
Jew." Assisting in conducting
the service will be members of
the ritual committee, headed by
Benjamin Reznik.
At a meeting last Sunday, at
which new members of the
congregation were installed,
Benjamin Weiss, Bnai Moshe
president, said that it is hoped
the congregation will Complete

Chairmen of the building

Dr. Goldmann praised Pre-
mier David Ben-Gurion for
the calm stand he has -taken
during the last few months.
He pointed out that this is
real proof of Israel's desire
for peace.

Reporting on the Jewish situ-
ation in Tunisia and Morocco,
Dr. Goldmann said that the
governments of those two coun-
tries refuse to be oriented ex-
clusively toward the Arab
League. The Jewish 'situation,
he continued, is nothing to com-
plain about. There is no anti-
Jewish violence in these two
countries, the Jews receive
equal treatment. There are Jews
in the Cabinets and Jews are
appointed to high government
posts.
