Stronger Security Measures Demanded by
Israelis; Slaying of 5 Protested *to UN

Tenseness created by renewed murders of Israelis, the am-
bushing of five civilians who were killed last week-end on the
Sdom-Beersheba Road and the resentment against the armistice
commission's failure to draw distinctions between attackers and
attacked, have created new demands for greater security meas-
ures by the Israel government.
Ahdut Avodah, a Socialist group that holds two of the 16
seats in the Israel Cabinet, now demands that Israel should
occupy Arab bases from which marauders have been attacking
Irsaelis.
Hapoel Hamizrachi, which also has two seats in the Cabinet,
also has demanded stronger action by the government.
Arab protests against Canadian sales of 24 jet-fighters to
Israel were rejected by Canadian Prime Minister Louis St.
Laurent.

to curb that policy.

Earlier, a Haifa-Jerusalem

The only casualty was the en-
gineer, who was wounded.
Israeli policemen aboard the
train returned the fire, which
came from across the border.
The engineer put on steam and
sped away. He remained at the

into Jerusalem, where he was
relieved and hospitalized. The
passengers lay on the floor of
the train during the exchange.
Both incidents followed an
announcement by the Israel
government of its withdrawal
from the Israel-Jordan Mixed
Armistice Commission, on the
heels of the MAC acceptance of

ment announcing that Israel had
submitted a complaint about the
murder of five Israelis and the
wounding of a sixth in an at-
tack by Jordanian infiltrators
on two Israeli civilian cars on
the Sdom-Beersheba road.
The statement said that Israel
did not request an investigation.
Ballistics examinations have
revealed that the bullets which
killed the five Israelis in the
road ambush near Sdom came
from guns used in two previous
fatal attacks on Israelis in that
area, the Foreign Minis t r y
spokesman declared. In view of
this information, he continued,
it is assumed that the Jordanian
authorities are aware of the
identity of the murderers. The
two earlier attacks, in April and
July, cost a total Of six lives.

Israel Avenges
Jordan Murders

Israel's forces showed their
determination to avenge _all
murders by infiltrating Arabs.
On Wednesday, an invading
force destroyed a Jordanese po
lice station near Nathaniah.
after the murder of two Israeli
'range workers whose ears were
cut off. „
Israel charged that the mur-
ders were committed by paid
killers who, in accordance with
an Arab custom, brought the
ears back to prove they had
accomplished their brutal mis-
sion.
In the reprisal by Israel,
which ended in a cease-fire or-
der from Gen. E. L. M. Burns
after a six-hour fight, 20 Jor-
danians and nine Israelis were
killed.
