Varon Tells Bond Women of Egyptian-Nasser European
Welfare Organiza-
"The Suez problem has grown
greatly over the past four or
five years, and this problem is
not merely one , of rising Arab
nationalism. It is no satisfaction
to Israel, however, to go to
Washington, London and Paris
and say, 'We told you so.' "
Speaking was Max Varon,
Consul of the State of Israel
who came here from his New
York office on Wednesday to
address a luncheon of the
Women's Division, State of
Israel Bonds, at Rainbow Ter-

Varon told his audience of

Jewish Maestro to Conduct
New York City Opera Here
Erich Leinsdorf, Jewish gen-
eral director of the New York
City Opera CoMpany, will con-
\ duct the company's perform-
ances Nov. 7-14 in Detroit.
Leinsdorf, newly appointed op-
era maestro, is also conductor
of the Rochester Philharmonic
Orchestra.
Born 1912 in Vienna, he first
studied piano, cello, composi-
tion, and theory at the State
Academy there. At 22,-.- he as-
sisted Bruno Walter, conducting
in Salzburg. He later became
chief assistant to Toscanini in
preparation of operas for the
Salzburg • festivals of 1935, 37
and 38.
Endorsed by Toscanini, he was
engaged, sight unseen, by the
Metropolitan Opera Association
in 1937. Aged 26, he conducted
ten performances of "Walkure,"
establishing himself as one of
the leading U. S. conductors.
After the death of Artur Bodan-
sky, in 1939 he became principal
conductor of German opera for
the Met. Demanded by the
Cleveland Orchestra, he joined
that organization in 1043. But
with only half a season finished,
he was requested to conduct for
the U. S. Army, into which he
was then inducted. ' •
Medically discharged in 1944,
he resumed activities with the
Opera and Symphony. A few
years later, he was one of the
first U.S. residents to conduct
in war-torn Europe, still con-
tinuing several months work
each year in Europe and Israel.
Last winter he completed 20
concerts as guest conductor of
the Israel Philharmonic Orches ,
tra.
In E4rope he has conducted
the London Philharmonic, the
Royal Philharmonic, the Can-
certgebouw in Amsterdam, and
the Vienna Opera and Philhar-
monic, among others.
Some of his American - guest
appearances have been with the
Frank Drama Shocks
Germans into Silence
BERLIN, (JTA) — The horri-
fying truth of Nazi World Wat
II atrocities against Jews
shocked German audiences to
silence last week, during the
performance of "The Diary of
Anne Frank,".. hit Broadway
play, based on the true diary of
a young Jewish girl murdered
in a German concentration
camp. The drama opened simul-
taneously in six West German
and one East German cities,
three of whose audiences re-
acted with silence, snuffing out
all aplause. In four Others, a
long period of silence was fol-
lowed by an ovation for the
German actors.
Three German newspapers,
"Der Kurier," "Die Welt" and
"Nacht-Depesche" indiCated that
the foundation of the play was
completely factual. The audience
reaction is significant in the
light of the disbelief and de-
rision with which movies of ac-
tual concentration camps had
been received just after the war
and the negligible sale of the
German edition of the Frank
book, plus its rebuffed intro-
duction in the German schools.
