Labor Zionists Set
Annual Meeting;
to Elect Officers
The annual meeting of the
Labor Zionist Institute will be
held at 8:30 p.m., Oct. 30, at
the institute building 19161
Schaefer it is announced by
Morris L. Schaver, president.
In addition to the election and
reappointment of members to
the board of trustees, many
problems of a local nature and
those related to Israel will be
discussed.
Nixon Changes Hotels
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—
A sudden switch in hotel
arrangements here for Vice-
President Nixon was made
after Jewish leaders here
complained that the hotel
was "restricted."

Checker Champ

Nathan R ubin, five-time
Michigan checker champion and
winner of the first National
Checker Association tournament
recently, will give a demonstra-
tion at 8:30 p.m., Thursday, at
Westown Hall, Fenkell and Bir-
wood.
Rubin's appearance is spon-
sored by Detroit Socialites,
which will utilize `the occasion
to install its new officers.
Members of the executive
council to be inducted are Eve-
lyn Briskin, Lou Jacobs, Harry
Green, Brenda Chips, Hy Koral,
Peter Steffin Sam Neshefsky,
Rose Altman, Jack Sherer and
Eve Goldberg.
Champion Rubin will face 20
opponents simultaneously dur-
ing the exhibition in an attempt
to establish a speed record. In
a similar performance, filmed in.
Hollywood, Rubin won 17
games in less than 15 minutes
time.
Hailed as 'a prodigy at the
age of 10 when he won the Chi-
cago boys championship, Rubin
has earned a succession of titles,
culminating in a c h a 1 1 e n-g e
match with William F. Ryan, of
New York, international grand-
master, which he won decisive-
ly, 5 to 1.
Detroit Socialites' first hike-
outing will be held at 1 p.m.
Sunday, at Cass Benton Park,
under the direction of Lou Ja-
cobs. Groups will leave by mo-
torcade at 1 p.m., from Stoepel
Park, Outer Dr. and Evergreen.

comprised of both Democrats
and Republicans, after it studied
reports from its 27 regional of-
fices about the rumors.

Other JWV leaders who will
attend, in addition to Kaufman,
are I. L. Feuer, national vice-
commander from Youngstown,
0., Fred T o u r k o w, of Fort
Wayne, Ind. and Sol M. Hober-
man, of Detroit, both national
committeemen.
Kaufman's visit will include
stops in Flint, Lansing, Grand
Rapids and Wyandotte, where
he will speak to JWV leaders.
He will spend Sunday and ear-
ly , Monday at Flint, as the
guest of the Jewish Community'
Council,
On Monday, he will return to
Detroit to be guest at a dinner
meeting of the Allied Veterans
Council . of Wayne County, 23-
member group of veterans' or-
ganizations. He will be intro-
duced by Lawrence Gubo w,
commander of the JWV in
Michigan.'
Later that evening, he will be
the guest of Post 135, in the
Memorial Home. All JWV and
Auxiliary members are invited
to attend.
Peddlers of religious bigotry
have thus far failed in the 1956
Presidential campaign to make
the propaganda impact that they
did in 1952, but at the same time
the campaign has been marred
by rumors of bigotry level at a
major candidate.
The target of these rumors
has been Vice-President Rich-
ard Nixon, said Henry Edward
Schultz, national chairman of
the Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith, who added that

Afternjon sessions will be de-
voted to discussion of Post ser-
vice and administrative func-
tions, including a review of the
hospital program. Over '50,000
man-hours were spent by JWV
members in various hospitals
during 1955.
