the superficialities, at best, gains
vague impressions. But for this
reporter there were compensa-
tions.
In Rome, I first visited a Eu-
ropean Jewish quarter.
It was a July evening. The
light still revealed the frame-
work of the old Jewish Ghetto,
where Jews yet dwell today.
The section still is bounded by
remnants of ghetto walls, bear-
ing the bold crest of Emperor
Julius Caesar.
No religious-school class quite
conveyed the shock of seeing
the height and thickness of
those walls. No history text
evoked the emphathy which
rose while passing through the
open arch once covered by an
immense gate.

security of metropolitan U.S.A.,
I had never as fully sensed how
religious persecution must feel,
as when standing there, think-

blocks.
Like all low-economic sectors
of Italy, the streets inside were
narrow, dark, and dirty. Being

Religious Youth Picket Mayor Agron's Arrival

Over 100 Jewish youth pick-
eted the arrival of Mayor Ger-
shon Agron of Jerusalem at
Idlewild Airport, New York, in
protest against "his recent ac-
tivities against religion and
religious Jews in Jerusalem."
The young demonstrators car-
ried picket signs declaring 'that
"a foe of Torah is not welcome"
and denouncing Mayor Agron
for "fighting the Sabbath with
clubs." Other signs carried by
the pickets scored the Jerusalem
Mayor for permitting the open-
ing of a Reform temple in Je-
rusalem as a "blow to Judaism."
In a leaflet the pickets de-
clared that Mayor Agron is vis-
