WASHINGTON, D.C. — An
intensive campaign for the sale
of $45,000,000 in Israel Bonds
between now and the end of
1956 was launched last week-
end by 800 Jewish community
leaders at the Mobilizaton Con-
ference for Israel, sponsored by
the Israel Bond Organizaton, at
the Shoreham Hotel here.
Responding to calls by Levi
Ethkol, Israel's Finance Min-
ister, Ambassador Abba Eban,
and Jerusalem Mayor Ger-
shon Agron, as well as cabled
messages from President Itz-
hak Ben-Zvi and Prime Minis-
ter David Ben-Gurion, calling
for increased economic aid
through Israel Development
Bonds, the delegates outlined
plans for a heightened cam-
paign effort during the corn-
ing months. A highlight of
this drive will be Israel Bond
events, in 70 communities, in
honor of the 70th birthday of
Israel Prime Minister David
Ben-Gurion. Mr. Ben-Gurion's
birthday will be celebrated on
Oct. 16.
"Israel counts on American
Jews to respond to its crisis by
raising record - sums for the
Israel Bond campaign," Abra-
ham Feinberg, President of the
Israel Bond Organization, told
the delegates to the Conference.
Mr. Feinberg called for "three
months of the most intensive
effort" in the Israel Bond drive
between now and the end of the
year.

Wins Bond Honors
at Capitol Parley

Mrs. CHARLES MILAN,
chairman of the Detroit Wo-
men's Division, State of Israel
Bonds, is presented with a spec-
ial scroll by LEVI ESHKOL,
Finance Minister for the State
of Israel. The ceremony took
place at the Washington Mobili-
zation Conference last week-
end, at which time special honor
was paid to "Women of Valor."
Mrs. Milan is one of only 10
women in the country who have
reached this goal, the sale or
purchase of $100,000 in State
of Israel Bonds. Thirteen Detroit
women are well on their way
towards this mark.

If you turn the

upside down, you won't .
find a finer wine than

Morris W. Berinstein, national
campaign chairman of the Israel
Bond drive, called on the con-
ference delegates to organize
the men and women in their
communities to purchase Israel
Bonds.
Dr. Abba Hillel S i 1 v e r,
chairman of the board of gov-
ernors of the Israel Bond Or-
ganization, in an address to
the conference, stated that the
- "present Munich appeasement
-line, vis-a-vis the dictator of
- Egypt and the Arab states
generally, will have to be
abandoned before lcng." •
Mr. Eshkol warned that the
Suez crisis has intensified the
threat of possible attack on
Israel by Egypt. He emphasized
the decisive importance of the
resources provided through
Israel Bonds in enabling the
country to maintain its econo-
mic structure despite the drain
of necessary defense expendi-
tures.
Mr. Eban, stated that America
and Israel have been drawn
closer together in the period
since Egypt took over the Suez
Canal. He stated that "the
strengthening of our economy
and financial structure now
moves to the highest place in
our system of priorities. The
Israel Bond Organization, which
has invested close to $250,000,-
000 in our economy, now has a
matchless service to perform for
the security and welfare of our
nation. Without a stable, resi-
lient economy, we cannot ad-
vance or consolidate the pro-
gress that we are making to-
ward a safer margin of de-
fensive strength."
Philip Klutznick, national
president of Bnai Brith, warned
the delegates •that it is "a dan-
gerous illusion to believe that
the peril of Israel's existence
could be dissolved completely
by diplomatic solutions or arms
parity with. the Arab states."
"The bread-and-butter prob-
lem of correcting the imbalances
of her economic life—a condi-
tion brgiught on by her need to
finance a war economy — must
be answered if Israel's survival
is to be meaningful," he said.
Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, Vice
President of the Israel Bond
Organization, reported that a
total of $247,552,700 in Israel
Bonds had been sold since the
inception of the drive in 1951.
Mayor Gershon Agron of
Jerusalem asserted that, despite
the necessity of preparing for a
possible Arab attack, Israel is
continuing to make vast strides
in its economic development
progra.ni.
Women delegates to the
Conference, who attended a
special Woman of Valor Sab-
bath Luncheon, heard ad-
dresses by Mrs. George M.
Leader, wife of the Governor
of Pennsylvania, and Orna
Porat, First Lady of the Israel
stage, and witnessed a cere-
mony honoring 11 Women of
Valor, each of whom has
bought and sold $100,000 or
more in Israel Bonds during
the past two years, for a total
of more than $1,100,000. Mrs.
Charles Milan, chairman of
the Detroit Women's Division,
was among those honored.
, Sales of Israel Bonds in the
synagogues during this year's
High Holy Day appeals have al-
ready passed .$4,500,000, and will
undoubtedly total well over
$5,000,000, Adolf L. Hamburger,
of Baltimore, National Israel
Bond Chairman fOr High Holy
Days, told the delegates.
Albert Arthur Levi n, of
Cleveland, accepted the national
chairmanship of the community
Leadership division of the State
of -Israel Bond Organization.
