WASHINGTON — Anti-Israel elements are attempting to bring about a secret meeting between President Eisenhower and Adlai Stev- enson to take the Israel issue "out of politics." The move is being made for bi-partisan agree- ment in the name of national security with the knowledge and tacit support of Secretary of State Dulles. A leading force in these behind-the-scenes activities is the anti-Israel "National Committee for Security and Justice in the Middle East." This group includes Commander Elmo Hutch- ison, former UN Armistice Commissioner who sought to blame Israel for Near East tension. Its leading spokesman is Alfred M. Lilienthal, who agitated against Israel at the recent Re- publican and Democratic conventions. Democratic leaders close to Stevenson thought it very unlikely the Demoratic nomi- nee would meet with the President on this matter. It was pointed out that Stevenson is firmly on record as favoring arms for Israel. Mr. Eisenhower has turned down such assist- ance. The Demorcatic platform openly pledges to offset Communist munitions shipments to the Arabs "by selling or supplying defensive weapons to Israel." The Republican platform does not advocate arms for Israel. li r r (Copyright, 1956, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) GENEVA — It all blew up over a story in the French newspaper "Figaro." Their Geneva correspondent Rene Mossue splashed the front page with charges that the Egyptian govern- ment was conducting what the spy conscious Swiss would bluntly call "economic espionage." Mossue went even further. He said that Egyptian agents had made exhaustive inquiries to find out what holdings Egyptian Jews had in Swiss banks It took over a week for the Swiss Foreign Office in Bern to comment on the affair. It did so with the kind of jargon typical of diplomatic circles caught up in an embarrassing disclosure. It referred to "so called" reports "brought to the 'attention of" etc. . . . and found the pat answers. But it did not answe• lVfossue's charges. But not so the Swiss press. With its usual pedantic insistence for counting every tree in the wood, they began to snap at the heels of veteran reporter Mossue. It was whispered: "He will be hauled over the coals for this one." Lilienthal said at San Francisco that he was told by some members of Congress that his anti-Zionist group should be satisfied that persons who felt similarly succeeded in keep- ing arms- for Israel out of the GOP platform. He identified his informants as Rep. Frances Bolton, Ohio Republican member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee: Sen. H. Alexander Smith, New Jersey Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Sen. Arthur V. Watkins, Utah Republican. The elements so concerned about alleged pro-Israel influences in domestic political affairs paid no attention to the injection of Arab propaganda into the Democratic and Republican conventions. Material distributed by the Arab Information Center in this country to convention delegates included propaganda carrying the letterhead of the "Egyptian Em- bassy . . Washington, D.C." A statement issued by the Embassy of Saudi Arabia was also sent to delegates. It alleged that Saudi Arabia does not discriminate against Jews. "The fact is," it said, "that only Zionists—regardless of their faith or nationality —are not permitted entry into Saudi Arabia. Indeed, American non-Zionists Jews have been welcomed into the country. An example on the record is Mr. Alfred Lilienthal, an anti-Zionist American Jew who visited Saudi Arabia in 1953. . . It must be understood that the Arab countries . . . view Zionism as a dangerous subversive world movement." The Egyptian Embassy in Washington is receiving and redistributing quantities of anti- Israel propaganda prepared by the anti-Zionist 'American Council for Judaism." This is the group that stands condemned by the three major rabbinical organizations. What they tried to do, failing this, was to belittle it, and indeed brought even more to light in their attempts. NEW YORK, (JTA) -- A warning that increasing tension in the bitter battle over school desegregation in the southern states will set up pressure on Southern Jews was made to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency by a nation- ally known authority on racial and minority problems. The nature of the two-fold dilemma—the increasing use of anti-Semitic hate-mongering by well-known bigots involved in the fight for white supremacy and the in- creasing insecurity of Southern Jews caught between local pressures and their tradition and affiliations with national Jewish organizations—was described by Alex- ander F. Miller, national community services director of the Bnai Anti-Defamation League. Tracing the background of the use of anti-Semitism in the current struggle, he noted that a number of Southerners had begun to make use of the bigot's equation of Judaism, Zionism and Communism almost immediately after the rebirth of ten- sion which followed the Supreme Court decision on segregation in the schools. Mr. Miller also noted another development along the same lines in cases where the Councils sometimes were fragmented. In such cases, the formation of fringe groups and new Councils was often carried out by persons with long records of anti- Semitism. Exaniples he cited included John Kasper, Rev. A. L. Shuler and Ace Carter. The ADL spokesman described what he termed a jump in the following evideuces of anti-Senitism within the past three to four months: the Ku Faux Klan, under its A considerable revival of new Grand Wizard, Eldon Edwards, has been noted. At least 75 Klan meetings have been held throughout the South within the past 90 days, and evidence of anti-Semitic overtones at these meetings has been abundant particularly at meetings held in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas. At Clinton, Tenn., where violence raged over the admis- sion of Negroes to local schools, two outside agitators present were Kasper and Carter. Evidence of the anti-Semitic nature of their activities was noted in the fact that local community leaders in the town received phone calls in which they were denounced as "Jews and Communists."
