Communal Leader s Send Greetings
to Harry Schumer on 60th Birthday

Scores of individuals and or-
ganizations with which he has
worked during the years sent
greetings to Harry Schumer last
month, as the Jewish communal
leader marked his 60th birth-
day.
The actual celebration was
quiet because he wished it that
way, as did his wife, Mildred,
and son, Bill; however, scores
of congratulatory messages ar-
rived from friends and co-work-
ers in numerous civic and busi-
ness groups.
Born Aug. 20, 1896 in Czens-
tochova, Poland, Mr. Schumer
came to this country in 1911 at
the age of 15. His story of busi z
ness success follows the dra-
matic start in this country of
many other immigrants.
After landing a series of jobs,
he entered the linen business at

Activities of the Workmen's
Circle have begun in two
spheres with the start of re-
hearsals for the Circle Chorus
and the beginning of the bowl-
ing league.
The Chorus, meeting at 8:30
p.m., Mondays, at Fitzgerald
School under the direction of
Dan Frohman, is currently au-

nity Chest, and is on the board
of the Weizmann Institute, Jew-
ish National Fund and Bar-Ilan

Closest to his heart and occu-
pying many of his spare mo-
ments is the Labor Zionist
movement, in which he has be-
come one of the leading local
member s.
He is chairman of the City
Committee of the Farband,
Labor Zionist Order, and chair-
man of the capital funds cam-
paign of the Labor Zionist In-
stitute, which was erected in
no small part because of his
efforts.
He has raised thousands of
dollars for the United Founda-
tion, Labor Zionist Movement,
Histadrut Campaig n, Israel
Bonds and Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, and holds a citation from
Henry Morgenthau, Jr. f o r
$3,000,000 in U. S. Bonds sold
during World War II.
He has been president of the
Detroit Linen Association 15
times, and is a permanent mem-
ber of its executive board.
His wife, Mildred, who shares
his experience, is herself active
in many causes, and 'for the
past 15 years has been secretary
honoris causa of the Jewish
National Fund.
Mr. Schumer's son, Bill, has
followed in his father's foot-
steps, becoming active in the
Labor Zionist Movement and
other communal organizations.
