Israel Bond Appeals on Yom Kippur
Spurred by Rabbi Hollander's Visit
,-
The chanting of "Ani
Maamin" recently brought to-
gether two groups 'of poitically
estranged Jews—in the USSR.
This was the feeling espressed
by Rabbi Hollander before a
meeting sponsored by the State
of Israel Bonds Religious Coun-
cil, at Beth Abraham Syna-
gogue, last Sunday.
Rabbi Hollander, former pres-
ident of the Rabbinical Council
of America, presently is affi-
liated with the Mount Eden
Jewish Center, Bronx, N. Y.
This summer he participated in
the Rabbinical Council delega-
tion tour to Soviet Russia..
It was the singing of Hebrew
songs at Friday night services
which gave closeness between
the American rabbinical visitors
and a scrutinizing congreation
in a Moscow synagogue, indi-
cated Rabbi Hollander. In the
"capital of atheism," the Jewish
religion was able to bind the
spirits of distanced human
beings, he added.
"Russian Jewish religious life
puts that of America to shame,
declared Rabbi Hollander. While
no specific Russian law forbids
adherance to Judaism, t h e
ideological climate is not fa-
vorable for the practice of re-
ligion in the U.S.S.R. yet, for
Shabbos services the Moscow
Synagogue was jammed to
capacity. Despite the tremend-
ous difficulties, Russian Jews
carry out most of the tenets of
orthodox Judaism with much
more fervor than the majority
- of American Jews, he stated.
T h e Zionist movement is
supressed in Russia, affirmed
Rabbi Hollander. He particu-
larly felt this when he was
forbidden to mention "E r et z
Yisroel" in any sermon which
he might deliver in the Soviet
Union.
"The future of Russian Jewry
must be judged on the basis of
two factors," said Rabbi Hol-
lander. "First, we must con-
sider the element of fear felt
by Russian Jews. Who have
been victimized by two scourges
—Hitler's and Stalin's. Second
is the unfortunate situation that
religious education is prohibited
by law."
"Jews have fat Poland and
Romania to enter Israel, the re-
ligious homeland," he asserted.
"Perhaps Jews will also some-
day be able to leave Russia for

Argentine Priest Asks
Jerusalem for Israel
BUENOS AIRES (JTA) —
Israel is Western civiliza-
tion's "outpost in the Middle
East," conducting "an ex-
emplary social experiment
which deserves copying by
the rest of the world," a
prominent Catholic clergy-
man, the Rev. Dr. Carlos
Cucchetti, declared upon his
return from a three-week
visit to Israel.
Israel should be given
sovereignty over all of
Jerusalem, part of which is
now occupied by Jordan, said
Father Cucchetti. The Jewish
State, he added, is "defend-
ing Western spiritual values
with great idealism and with
the heroism of the Macca-
beans."
Manilla Archbishop Leads

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Rt.
Rev. Msgr. R u f i n o Santos,
Roman Catholic Archbishop of
Manila, arrived here with a
group of 81 pilgrims from the
Philippine Islands for a four-
day tour of Christian holy
shrines in Israel.
during the entire period nor
were they allowed to contact
the authorities—an Israel For-
eign Ministry spokesman here
declared:
"Col. Nasser has demonstrated
in the most brazen and un-
equivocal way his contempt for
the obligations under the Con-
stantinople Convention and the
explicit ruling of the Security
Council of September, 1951, at
the very time he is seeking to
persuade the world that he is
ready to safeguard freedom of
shipping through the canal."
