Even in Biblical times, when
the national and individual lives
of the Jews were as untroubled
as those of their. neighbors,
they were a people with humor.
So deeply rooted was this sense
of humor that it did s not deter-
iorate with dispersion, but was
enhanced.
The humor of the Talmud is
subtle. The ancient rabbis were
masters of repartee and anec-
dote, anecdotes of a peculiar
kind, though: ,they were calcu-
lated to make one smile and
think, but not roar with laugh-
ter.
Here is a typical Talmudic
anecdot e: "A middle-aged
man had two wives. One was
young and the other was an
elderly lady. The younger
wanted him to look yOunger,
so she used to pluck his white
hairs. The older however,
wishing the very opposite,
plucked his dark hairs. And
so the man soon became bald-
headed."
