Construction of the first sub-
way in the Middle East began
recently in Haifa, where al
most $20,000,000 from State
of Israel Bond income has
helped to accelerate industrial
development, n e w housing
and major port expansion. A
construction worker on the
port 36 years ago, Mayor Hu-
shi of Haifa is shown above
using a working model to ex-
plain the proposed subway to
his. grandson Shai. The Mayor
officially opened the cere-
monies by using a pneumatic
drill to break the soil, com-
menting that the subway will
connect already-planned new
housing projects on Mount
Carmel with the downtown
business district. When com-
pleted the subway will be
over a mile long and the sub-
way trip will take six minutes
instead of the bus trip of
three-quarters of an hour.

`Stay Out of Western
Plots,' Cairo Warns

LONDON, (WJA)—In Hebrew
language broadcasts on the eve
of the London Conference on
Suez, Cairo radio referred to
editorial comment in Israel's
press and radio and statements
by "leading Government offi-
cials," which had resulted from
talks broadcast in Cairo's
Hebrew service "about the at-
titude of the Israeli Jews to-
wards the Canal question."
The Cairo broadcast declared:
"We wish to emphasise that
the Egyptian broadcasting sta-
tion, in its various transmis-
sions, whether in Arabic,
Hebrew or other languages, does
not mention the Jews with con-
tempt or threaten them. It
treats the Jews as citizens of
this part of the world.
"There is no intention of ex-
terminating, expelling or per-
secuting them. The rest of the
Arab countries are always ready
to give them equal treatment
with the rest of the inhabitants
if they keep out of Western
plots. If they keep out of such
plots, this will be to their ad-
vantage.
"This is what is said by the
Hebrew transmission from. Cairo
radio. If it is necessary to broad-
cast these things in Arabic, we
are ready to do so in order that
Arabic-speaking Jews may hear
them; we know that these Jews
prefer to speak the language
of the Yemen rather than any
other."
