of excommunication exercised
against a condemned individual.
As a measure of discipline for
the community or the syna-
gogue, certain forms of excom-
munication were used either
on a temporary basis or as a
permanent decree. There were
times when only the property
of an individual was put into
such a category as a means of
confiscation. At other times the
individual himself was thus
punished. It was a custom at
one time when an individual
had died, while under this ban,
that a stone was placed on his
grave. The "Cherem" was once
the name of the most rigorous
form of . excommunication.
