THE HOLY SHEKEL
and proverbs entitled "Sheke
Hakodesh" (The Holy Shekel)
It is composed in Hebrew verse
and has an interesting prose in•
troduction in which the autho C
states: •
"0 wise one, lay it to heart
at all times, yea, every day,
sabbath and new moon, and
you will find in my "Shekel
Hakodesh" every good qual-
ity, more precious than gold,
yea, -than fine gold."
What does he mean by this.
The shekel was never made o !
gald. In the oldest .times, I
was a -weight. The Hebre ,
word "Shakol" means
weigh.' The Biblical mention o
shekels must refer to uncoine
ingots—a monetary unit i
ancient times.
The first historical mentio
of the right given to the Jewish
government to strike coins can
be found in the first book of
the Maccabees (XV 5, 6).

Jerusalem though shall re-
main holy and free."
Of all the Jewish coins, the
large silver coin of the second
revolt, named shekel, is best
known. Worth four drachmas,
it shows a beautiful temple with
a high door and rich ornaments
on one side. Some of these
coins have a large star above
the roof, interpreted as a sym-
bol of the heroic Bar Kochiba,
whose name means "Son of a
Star!"
Various were the designs on
the reverse of the shekel: either
the traditional Jewish fruit,
lulab and ethrog or the chalice
or goblet. This latter is the
symbol of the urn out of which
the_ Jews ate the manna while
wandering in the desert. Some-
times the reverse shows a
candlestick, sometimes a lyre
with five strings, frequently a
stick .of Aaron's rod that
budded:
"And behold the rod of
Aaron for the house of Levi
was budded, and brought
forth buds and bloomed
blossoms, and yielded al-
monds."
The inscriptions on all these
coins are in Aramaic: They tell
of Jerusalem's deliverance men-
tioning the date in revolution-
ary years. Shekels were coined
in silver or bronze and there is
many a reference to them in the
Bible, mostly in a figurative
sense.
Joseph ben Isaac Kimhi's
work "Shekel Hakodesh" has
every good duality "more pre-
cious than fine gold," to quote
his own words. In ripe sagacity
and depth far ahead of his
time, Kimhi recognized and
frankly states that "the vital
soul of wisdom is beyond the
heavens in duration."
In his-well- entitled chapters
(all written in verse), he gives
proverbs and maxims on all
essential phases of life; none of
them has become obsolete.
Here is what he says on
friendship:
"The acquisition of friends,
constant and true, is a good
