I was young then, and full of pep. Hastings Street was then the Palmer Woods of the city. The cream of the Jew- ish population lived there. The end of East Jefferson was on the city's outer edges. It was the only place where a new- comer to Detroit could find housing, and that was where I lived. Those of us who lived there managed to keep a kosher house. At least we thought we did. One time we found out that the young man with whom we used to send our chickens to the schochet, couldn't quite figure out why the schochet was worth the ten cents we were giving him for the slaughter. So, one day we were horrified to dis- cover that for months our chick- ens had been killed not by the schochet, but by our delivery boy, using a razor blade. A calculated risk, and we had lost. Four days before one Yom Kippur I was visited by a man named Portnoy, who asked that we come to his house on Yom Kippur to form a • Minyan, as his aged father-in-law was very ill and could not venture into the city for services. He told me that the old man never davened on holidays without a Minyan. I agreed to come. That Yom Kippur was on Shabbos that year. Friday.night we went for the evening serv- ices. I went early and met the pious old man. He thanked me for coming and noted that we were good medicine for him. He had been getting all the medical attention that h e needed, but the doctor could treat only his body. He was a fine old man. Kept the Sabbath, never did manual labor on Shabbos or Yom Tov. He looked By DANIEL L. TICKTON a Shofar. One of the boys ran home and got his horn on which he was taken lessons, and blew us a set of perfect "Tekios." The old man thanked us very warmly for coming, and asked us to be kind to him once more and come for Sukkot services. We didn't have to make a de- cision. Three days after Yom Kippur the old man's life was o'rer. We were glad that we had come for his Minyan to make the old man happy. In Memory of SGT. MORRIS MILLER Son Of MR. and MRS. "Payes" covered his ears with their curled locks, and he had a fine white beard. He started the Kol Nidre aloud from the Machzor. It had been difficult getting a Minyan, and there were just ten of us there. He davened slowly. He said that a man who hurried in his prayers was unable to concen- trate on the words or on their meanings. We all agreed. All but one, that is. And the next morning, the opposition didn't show up. We no longer had ten. We were angry that he had de- serted us just because the old man davened so slowly, but we couldn't worry about that now. We had to go out and find a tenth man! We were having a hard time of it, as those Jews of the neigh- borhood who were not with us had already gone to the syna- gogues in town. Finally some- one recalled that on Algonquin Avenue there lived a person whom he thought was Jewish, although he never mingled with Jews, -a Mr. Kaner. I set out to see if we couldn't locate him. We found the house, but our man was not at home. His wife, in a thick Irish brogue, told us that he would be home from work around noon. He had told her all about Yam Kippur, and she was sure that after he had eaten lunch, he would be glad to help us out. But we needed someone im- mediately. We drafted two kids whose combined ages totalled 13, gave them each a Machzor, and count e d them into the Minya n. Whether this was strictly according to the rules or not, we didn't know, but we were able to tell the old man that we had a Minyan, and that we could continue the services. Around 12:30 p.m. our man from Algonquin Avenue showed up, and we were glad to see him, despite his well-fed look. After Yom Kippur, we re- membered that we did not have Holiday Good Cheer JOHN F.
