Bias In Sports
A few months ago, some
readers were shocked to dis-
cover that the staid and impres-
sive, New York Athletic Club,
one of the city's ornaments,
bars 'Jews and Negroes from its
teams. Local New York politi-
cians claimed they knew noth-
ing about such bias, although
the secretary of the. club, Alfred
Foster, admitted that the club
had no Jews or Negroes on its
teams. Considering that New
York's Jewish and Negro popu-
lations are heavy and that Ne-
gro and Jewish athletes have
proved their abilities over and
over again, it is a peculiar situ-
ation—and, one might even say,
with ugly undertones.
Robert Cohen .Quits
Robert Cohen of France, has
quit the ring, folloWing a knock-
out and a loss. It is a pity, for
Cohen was not only one of the
few outstanding Jewish ring-
men; he is also an observant
Jew whose demeanor on a trip
to South Africa won for him
the applause of his fellow Jews
in Africa and elsewhere. Nat
Fleischer, editor of Ring maga-
zine, first called attention in the
United States to Cohen's abili-
ties. But the little fighter
burned himself out before he
could come to the United States
and show his wares. Now a ca-
reer is finished and we have
not had the pleasure of seeing
the boxer at his best. And he
is only 25.
