Why is it that the story of the binding of Isaac is read
in the synagogue on the second day of Rosh Hashanah?

'ashi explains that this portion is read so that the Almighty
may remember the incident 'and have mercy upon us for the
sake of the spirit of sacrifice displayed by Isaac who asked to
be bound to the altar of sacrifice. This theme is the predominant
theme of the holiday. It is even said that the ram's horn is blown
to remind the Almighty of this incident since it was a ram that
was finally substituted for Isaac when the Almighty spired his
life. Furthermore, this passage is a continuation of the passage
read on the first day of Rosh Hashanah which tells of the birth
of Isaac. Sarah was remembered with a child on Rosh Hashanah
and thus is Isaac's birth read from the Torah on the first day
of Rosh Hashanah.

Why do some people pray in a bent go sit,L ill during
the High Holy Days?

This is considered to be a sign of humility before the Al
mighty. On Rosh Hashanah especially, a man must be hum-
ble before the Almighty. Praying in a bent position displays
this feeling. Some claim that the Shofar which is blown on Rosh
Hashanah must be bent to show that man must bend his will
before God.

Why do some people refrain from eating nuts on Rosh
Hashanah? -
There are mainly two reasons advanced for this custom.
One is a practical one. According to this season one refrains froin
eating nuts on Rosh Hashanah because eating nuts increases
coughing and spitting due to the small bits that get caught in
the throat. This would lend to a disrespectful behavior _in the
midst of prayer or at the table at the holiest time of the year.
The other reason is symbolic. The Hebrew letters that go
into making up the Hebrew word for nuts have the same numeri-
cal equivalent as the Hebrew letters that go into making up the
word "sin" in the Hebrew-language. The Jew symbolically avoids
any reference to sin by abstaining from nuts. This might be a
means of showing that the first step towards repentance is to
avoid any connection with sin, or no matter how remote it
might be, even though it be only symbolic in nature. Rosh
Hashanah is the time for repentance and this symibolic refrain
is considered quite appropriate.

What is the reason and origin of the many liturgical poems
which are included in the High Holiday liturgy?

VIENNA
BAKERY

Because Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are so important
and crucial in the life of man, the rabbis sought to take ad-
vantage of every avenue of expression available to man so that
he might be able to seek the mercy of the Creator. The services
are longer on the High Holy Days than on any other festival so
that man may spend as much time as possible in prayer and
meditation. For this reason many liturgical poems were included
in the liturgy.
One of the sources (Sefer ha-itim) claims that most of the
liturgical poems were composed during the periods of persecu-
tion. In the course of this time Jews were unable to read the
Torah, being forbidden to study it because of prohibitive
decrees from a hostile government. They therefore wrote litur-
gical poems in whose text .was interwoven the various laws and
requirements of the holidays as well as the significance of the
holidays, so that in _reciting these poems the Jew was auto-
matically reminded of the laws, the custom and the significance
of the occasion.

Why is it that the last note of each unit of the Shofar
blasts is extended longer than the others?

The last note is called "Tekiab Gedolah" and is purposely
extended over a longer period of time than the other notes to
signify to the congregation that this completes the set of blasts
from the Shofar. The Maharil derived this from the Biblical
text in Exodus which states: "When the ram's horn soundeth
long, they shall come up to the mount" (Exodus 19:13). This
statement was made at Mount Sinai and indicated that the
Divine Presence had left the area. Just as a long blast an-
nounced the end of a situation at Sinai, so does the long Shofar
blast on Rosh Hashanah announce the culmination of a series.

Why is it customary to dip in honey the first piece of
- bread eaten at the table on Rosh Hashanah"

This is clone while reciting the expression: "May it be Thy
will that a good and sweet year be renewed for us." The rabbis
in the Midrash considered it a good omen. It may be that man
was taught thus to understand that if he would wish to have a
sweeter life in the coming year, he himself must initiate this
condition with his own mellowness and sweetness. Man was
thus shown that he has it within his own province to begin his
own improvement.
