Germans Believe
Ex-Mufti Brought
VonLeers to Egypt
Rosh Hashanah at Pearl Harbor
BONN, (JTA) — Haj Amin el
Husseini, the former Mufti of
Jerusalem, is believed in gov-
ernment circles here to have ar-
ranged for the hiring by. the
Egyptian government of the no-
torious anti-Semitic propagan-
dist, Dr. Johannes von Leers.
Von Leers was revealed this
week to be working for Cairo's
Ministry of National Guidance,
President Gamal Abdel Nasser's
propaganda department.
The ex-Mufti had sent a greet-
ing to Von Leers when the lat-
ter was editing "Der Weg," a
German-language monthly ded-
icated to perpetuation of the
Nazi brand of anti-Semitism
which Von Leers issued in
Buenos Aires during the Peron
regime.
In his message to Von Leers,
the ex-Mufti thanked the un-
reconstructed Nazi "for ventur-
ing to take up the battle against
the power of darkness that has
become incarnate in world Jew-
ry."
When Peron was overthrown
in Argentina, Von Leers wrote
to friends here that he had been
"invited by Egyptian authorities
to deliver some lectures" in
Cairo.
In this quonset but which is Aloha Chapel in Pearl Har-
bor, Jewish personnel in the Navy and Marine Corps stationed
at the Hawaiian Naval Base usher in the Jewish New Year.
This year marks the fifteenth anniversary of the day of in-
famy—December 7, 1941—on which the Japanese attacked
Pearl Harbor. This scene is typical of hundreds of services
which will be held for 150,000 Jewish servicemen and hos-
pitalized veterans in the National Jewish Welfare Board's 39th
"Operation Rosh Hashanah." Bibles, prayer-books, taleisim,
yarmelkes and other supplies, as well as tons of food, are all
furnished by JWB. High Holy Day feasts and home hospitality
are arranged by volunteers on JWB's Armed Services Com-
mittees and USO-JWB workers. Services are conducted by
Jewish chaplains — recruited, ecclesiastically endorsed and
served by JWB's Commission on Jewish -Chaplaincy.
Poland Has Only Two Rabbis for Its YOU'LL NEVER
50,000 Jews; No Religious TeaChers
do better .. .
WASHINGTON, D. C.—There
Are only two rabbis — and no
Jewish religious teachers — in
all Poland, reports an American
rabbi who recently returned
from behind the Iron Curtain,
Writing in The National Jew-
ish Monthly, published by Bnai
Brith, Dr. Israel Mowshowitz,
rabbi of the Hillcrest Jewish
Center, -Flushing, N. Y., said
that Jewish community leaders
in Poland were eager for Amer-
ican Jewry to aid them in re-
establishing Hebrew schools and
seminaries.
Before the war Poland had
3,000,000 Jews. Today there are
50,000.
Dr. Mowshowitz, who headed
a delegation of the New York
Board of Rabbis on a visit to
Russia, Poland and Czechoslo-
vakia observed:
1. Anti-Semitism still exists
in Poland. A young Jewish in-
tellectual told him: "We are al-
ways reminded who we are."
2. Polish Jews speak openly of
emigration, and Rabbi Zev
Morenu, in Lodz, told an audi-
ence gathered in honor of - the
American rabbis that instead of
spending so much energy trying
to rebuild Polish Jewry "we
must ask the Polish government
to permit us to go to Israel,
where we can create a new life
for ourselves."
3. This year, for the first
time, heads of Jewish religious
communities throughout Poland
were elected by their consti-
tuents. Until last March, they
had been appointed by the
government.
4. In Czechoslovakia, there
are six rabbis, whose salaries—
like those of all ministers--are
paid by the state. The Jewish
community may elect its own
rabbi, subject to approval by
the Ministry for Ecclesiastical
Affairs.
5. Religion is taught in the
Czech public schools, but those
who. study it face obstacles in
gaining entrance to schools of
higher education.

Israelis Walk Out of
VIENNA, (JTA) — The Is-
rael delegation participating in
the International Students Con-
gress, now meeting in Prague,
walked out demonstratively in
protest against an attack on Is-
rael by a Syrian delegate. The
Syrian assailed Israel as the
aggressor in the Middle East.
An Israel demand for the op-
portunity to reply to the attack
received some support from
other delegations.
