STERN _ Harold Ribalow's new book, "The History of Israel's Postage Stamps," was recently reviewed in The Jewish News. We add our praise to this volume which makes a fine addition to any stamp collector's library of phi- latelic literature, It is a helpful piece of resource material for the collector who sees his hobby having an educational as well as recreational value. Last week o u r "True or False?" quiz posed various ques- tions of philatelic and postal. history interest. Here are the answers .. . how well did you do? (1) False: Stamps of the U.N., which are issued by the United Nations Postal Administration, may only -be used at U.N. Head- quarters in New York. – (2) False: Iceland was not one of the countries whose flags were pictured on stamps of The Overrun Countries Issue of 1943-44. These countries were Poland, Czechoslovakia, Nor- way, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Greece, Yugo- slavia, Albania, Austria, Den- mark and Korea (Scott Nos. 909-921). (3) True: je wish National Fund seals were used in Israel as postage stamps. This took place in Israel during the pe- riod which preceded the issu- ance of the first regular postdge stamps. The J.N.F. seals were overprinted to indicate their use as postage stamps. (4) True: The first regular stamps of Israel did not have the name of the country on them. They merely indicated "Hebrew Post." (.5) False: Israel has not been denied membership in the Uni- versal Postal Union (a U. N. agency setting international postal regulations and rates). Israel is one of 91 members of the U.P.U. (6) False: While the over- whelming majority of U. S. post- age stamps have been produced by the engraving process, the Overrun Countries Issue men- tioned above was printed in part by offset. (7) True: Postage stamps 01 England (United Kingdom) do not carry the name of the coun- try. Minkus Worldwide Nos. 383 and 384 are excluded as the in- scription on these stamps, "Fes- tival of Britain," was not shown to identify the country of ori- gin per se. (8) False: Israel specialists cannot collect plate number blocks of stamps. Israeli stamps have "tabs" rather than plate numbers. (9) True: Hitler did prepare stamps for use in India after t he Nazi hordes were to invade that country. Never got to use them though. (10) True: The coins shown o n the • first regular postage s tamps of Israel do date back o the time of Bar Kochba, 31 - 135 C.E. 1 1 Industrial Contractor — 24 Hour Service 19003 John R , . .01 ■MMI1,041.11.011MOMM-011M.D■HMINE.041!01 - FOrest 6-1800 . 1 lame Children for emetery Desecrations HAMBURG (JTA)—The ity of Hamburg has.
