a labor of love for Louis Sax
who has cooperated with the
congregation in providing serv-
ices for residents of thi Down-
river area who otherwise would
have been deprived of an op-
portunity of worshipping in
their community.

Cantor Shapiro Officiates
at Beth Shalom Services
Cantor Robert Shapiro, a na-
tive Detroiter, will officiate at
the first Friday evening service
of the year at Cong. Beth Sha-
lom at 8:30 p.m., today.
The cantor, now a senior at
the Cantor's Institute of the
Jewish Theological Seminary in
New York, will share the pulpit
with Rabbi Mordecai S. Hal-
pern, spiritual leader of the con-
gregation.
For the past three years, Can-
tor Shapiro has officiated at
services of Cong. Beth David,
Irvington,. N. J. The community
is invited to the services which
are held at the Tyler School,
Tyler and Lincoln, in Oak Park.

Downtown Synagogue to Conduct
Services at Veterans' Memorial
Holiday services of the Down-
town Synagogue this year again
will be conducted in the Vet-
erans' Memorial Building, be-
low Jefferson avenue, at the_foot
of Griswold street. Rabbi Leo
Steinhauser will officiate. The
cantor will be Samuel Unovitz.
Detroit's Downtown Syna-
gogue, nationally known, was
established in 1935. It filled a
need for workers in the Loop,
as well as for many transients—
salesmen from 'other cities who

were in Detroit briefly—who,
otherwise, - might have found
it difficult to worship, particu-
larly for Yahrzeit.
The first minyan met in the
office of Judge William Fried-
man, and_, subsequently, in the
offices of -a numbei- of attorneys.
In 1937, the group was reor-
ganized by the late Rabbi Harry
Z. Gordon, and services con-
ducted_ in the Hammond Build-
ing. In 1940, the Downtown
Synagogue was taken over, and
since has been supported by the
Isaac Agree Memorial Associa-
tion. Headquarters were in the
Tolsma Building, at the corner
of Griswold and State, until
that edifice was demolished a
fortnight ago to make way for a
modern office building.
Temporary services are being
conducted — Mondays through
Saturdays—mornings at 8, eve-
nings- at 5:20, at 727 David Stott
Building, through the courtesy
of Louis Berry, one of the own-
ers of the Stott Building.
Last year's holiday services at
the Veterans' Memorial Building
were attended by hundreds. It
is expected that as many, if not
more, will respond during the
:approaching holidays.

of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Schwartz
who will celebrate the Bar
Mitzvah of their son, Frederick
Robert.
Dr. Leon Fram will deliver

Meanwhile, the temple office
will be open each evening and
Sunday morning to accept ap-
plications for membership.
