STEEL RUBBISH DRUMS
Two Israeli Inventions
to Aid State's Economy=
TEL AVIV, (JTA)-Two in-
ventions important to Israel's
economy-one to increase vastly
the yield of oil from bitumine
stones in the Dead Sea area,
the other to reduce greatly the
cost of extracting precious mag-
nesium from Dead Sea minerals
-were announced here.
_ They have been developed by
Alexander Zarchin, the engi-
neer who fled a Soviet forced-
labor camp in 1951 and who,
only a week agb, was announced
as the inventor of a method for
desalting water.
One of Zarchin's latest inven-
tions, according to the Israeli
Inventors Association, will yield
as high as 25 per cent oil from
millions of tons of bitumine
stones. The other Zarchin im-
provement, concerning magne-
sium, would reduce the price of
this mineral from $2,000 a ton
to about 250 Israeli pounds ' for
the same quantity.

Adenauer Receives Goldmann
BONN, (JTA) Although
West German, Chancellor Kon-
rad Adenauer is currently on
vacation and has sharply cur-
tailed his governmental , activ-
ities, it has been learned here
that he h-as received Dr. Nahum
Goldmann, president of t h e
World Zionist Organization, for
talks. The conference pertained .
to questions of German repar-
ations and the speeding-up of
indemnification claims by indi-
vidual victims of the 'Nazis.
South African Zionists
Ban Separate Drives
JOHANNESBURG (JTA) -
After a tense debate, the 25th
biennial South African Zionist
Conference decided by a vote
of 185 against 63, to amend
the South African Zionist Fed-
eration's constitution to pro-
hibit separate campaigns for
party furlils by any group in
the Federation.
A breach of the new regula-
tion, according to the decision,
would be puniShable by sus-
pension or expulsion of the of-
fending party.
The decision formalizes a
gentlemen's agreement in ex-
istence since 1948, whereby the
Zionist Federation had agreed
to allocate funds to each party
from the biennial United Is-
rael Appeal' on condition that
the parties refrain from sep-
arate campaigns.
In spite of that gentlemen's
agreement, hoWever, it was
charged that the Zionist Re-
visionists here continued to
conduct their own fund drives
through visits of Herut leaders
from Israel.
After the constitutional
amendment had been adopted,
a personal assurance was given
to the Revisionist delegates by
Israel Dunsky, president of the
South African Zionist Federa-
tion.
Appealing f o r Federation
unity, he pledged personally
that he would do his utmost
to help the Revisionists obtain
an adjustment of any legiti-
mate grievance within._ the
Zionist movement, whether the
grievance was against the
South African movement or
against the Jewish 'Agency for
Palestine. He pleaded with the
Revisionists to accept t h e
"overwhelming decision" of the
Conference.

ment on questions discussed

tary attache at the -Israel Em-
