Jewish-Christian Workshop Declares

LISTENING

Widespread misconcep
tions about "the true meaning
of the Crucifixion" have contri-
buted to an artificial separation
between Jews and Christians in
many areas of American life, a
Jewish - Christian workshop
group declared in a statement.
issued this week. These miscon-
ceptions, the group stressed,
"can be corrected by reaffirm-
ing the historical Christian
Church's belief that the Jews
did not kill Christ."
"To the Christian," the group's
statement said, "the true mean-
ing of the Crucifixion is that
Christ upon the Cross accom-
plished man's salvation, when
man by his sinful nature was
unable to do so."
This statement was adopted
by the Workshop on Jewish-
Christian Relations, which met
at the McCormick Theological
Seminary, in Chicago, in cone
junction with the eighth annual
Interdenominational I n s t i tute
on Racial and Cultural Rela-
tions, sponsored by the National
Council of Churches.- Represen-
tatives of nine denominations,
from 13 states, took part in the
Institute's sessions.
The statement issued by the
Workshop on Jewish-Christian
Relations noted that "anti-Sem-
itism is a social disease deriving
from more than one cause," and
cited these as among the other
causes:

Representing the Anti-Defam-
ation League of Bnai Brith,
Rabbi Arthur Gilbert, director
of ADL's department .of inter-
religious cooperation, partici-
pated, along with Phil Jacobson
