Local Attorney, Charles Goldstein,
Enters Profession of the Sonl

For the first time in a number
of years, Temple Israel, during
the forthcoming High Holy
Days, will be without the serv-
ices of its "lay rabbi."
Charles L. Goldstein, a foun-
der of the -congregation and a
past president, instead of help-
ing to conduct Temple Israel's
services, will be in Monroe,
Mich., leading services of Tem-
ple Bnai Israel.
Goldstein's tenure as "Rabbi"
began last Friday night when
he conducte-d sabbath eve serv-

ices at the Monroe synagogue,
located at 8th St. and Washing-
ton.
The synagogue, with a mem-
bership of some 20 families,
mostly business and professional
people, has had its own building
for about three years.
About a year ago, when Tem-
ple Israel's Assistant Rabbi, M.
Robert Syme, spoke before a Ro-
tary Club meeting hi Monroe,
he was asked by Dr. George J.
Feldman, secretary of the Mon-
roe congregation, to suggest a
rabbi to serve the congregation
at services twice a month and
on the Holy Days.
Because of the small size of
the congregation, it could not
afford to maintain the full-time
services of a rabbi. Yet, the
members of Temple Bnai Israel
wished to hold regular services.
At the suggestion of Rabbi
Syme, Bnai Israel's president,
Francis Rush, and Dr. Feldman
contacted Goldstein, who agreed

to serve as Bnai Israel's part-
time rabbi.
_ An attorney, Goldstein prac-
tices at 810 Penobscot Bldg. with
a son, Alan P. He graduated
from the University of Michi-
gan with a BA degree in 1917,
and two years later received his
doctor of jurisprudence degree
from_ the university.
His formal religious training
began when he was eight years
old, as a student in the old Di-
vision Street Talmud Torah. In
1921 and 22, he read the services
at the Jewish Home for Aged.
During World War I, Gold-
stein served as a lieutenant in
the field artillery, and during
the second war he did his bit by
conducting services for Jewish
personnel at Selfridge Field.
He has been active in Temple
Israel activities since the con-
gregation was f ounded. He
served as the first president of
the Men's Club from 1941 to
'44, and was president of the
congregation from 1944 to '47.
In addition to- his religious
activities, Goldstein is a direc-
tor of the Detroit Bar Associa-
tion, a vice-president of the
Jewish Community Council and
secretary of the Detroit Chap-
ter, American Jewish Commit-
tee.
A native Detroiter, Goldstein
lives with his wife at 20412
Stratford. Besides Alan, he has
two other children, Samuel and
Mrs. Charles Braun.
