German Youth to See French Film on Life in Concentration Camps ALL CITY MOVING COMPANY NEW YORK (JTA) - The West German official press and information office has purchased German rights to the French documentary film "Nuit et Brouillard" (Night and Fog), which depicts the Nazi concen- tration camps, for showing to German officials and youth groups. The action by the Bonn gov- ernment, reported here in Va- riety, show 'business trade news- paper, was considered particu- larly ironic in view of the fact that the short film had been withdrawn from the recent Cannes Film Festival by the French-in deference to German sensibilities. The' concentration camp film will be available for regular trade showings in Germany, in addition to its official use. The Bonn regime paid 25,000 marks (about $6,000) for the rights. Variety quoted New York sources as speculating that the move was inspired by West Germany's desire to counter criticism to the effect that It wanted "to play down that macabre aspect of the Nazi era." The trade paper's report also made the point that most Ger- mans today still- prefer not to discuss the camps or the mil- lions exterminated in them. In view of that fact, Variety noted, the current move, "evcri if offi- cially sponsored," is not "likely to be popular." Large, Modern Vans Always Open VSQUIRE CARPET CLEANERS. The Jewish theaters in Buch- arest and Jassy, the report adds, were now celebrating the 80th anniversary of the foundation of the Yiddish theater in Ro- mania by Avram Goldfaden. ° A Yiddish transmission from Bucharest included quotations from an article in the Soviet `Literaturnaya Gazeta' on the work of Itzik Feffer, who was described as "a brave Bolshe- vik" and. "well-known Soviet Jewish-- writer." (Feffer disappeared about 1948 and was reported to have been executed in 19-52). He warned however that this would "tarn Israel into a colony of many foreign states, and that those now struggling against the Western Powers would ul- timately, save the Israeli people from imperialism." Two days earlier, a broad- cast in the same service ac- cused "Zionist extremists" of trying to make common cause with the West against Egypt. The commentator expressed his confidence that Israeli Jews were too intelligent to be taken in by "Zionist warmongering of this kind"; they knew that "the Middle East peoples must co- operate to solve their own prob- lems,' instead of letting the im- perialists use them for their own interests." • - EXPERT washing machine and dryer repairs, work guaranteed, free esti- ANKLE LENGTH wedding gown and veil for sale. The conference, now under way at Disley, in Cheshire, heard Dr. Charles Boasson, le- gal adviser to the Netherlands Legation hi Iszael, describe the special problems Israel had encountered with respect to participation in the functions of the World Meteorological Organization and World Health Organization. Delegates from 14 countries attending the conference also heard Dr. Boasson's expression of surprise at the fact that the United States was not pushing more actively the Johnston plan for regional development of the resources of the Jordan River. He affirmed that Israel was most willing to cooperate with the Arabs in plans for re- gional development and added an expression of his belief in the feasibility of a Jordan Val- ley Authority. L. A • Home Ups Ante: Couple is,98 and_95 LOS ANGELES, (JTA)-The Jewish Home for the Aged here is becoming one of the city's key romantic centers. Recently, its 307 residents witnessed a ceremony uniting David Cohen, 88, with Miss Carolyn Levy, 85. Last week, a couple each ten years older also wed. They were Myer K r i c h, 98, and Hinda tubas, 95. Krich, the Home's oldest resi- dent since he entered last-May 2,_ was married for more . than 75 years before his first wife passed away in 1951, while his bride was a, widow for more than 40 years before taking the matri- monial step again. She has been at the Home since Jan. 17. "I liked her from the - moment I saw her," said Krich. In turn, she called him "a fine man .. . and very nice." A retired tailor, Kirch is still spry and chipper. "I am strictly a vegetarian and I love to exercise," he said. Just recently, when his eyesight began to fail him, he trimmed his daily six-mile walk to a mere four miles.„"You're only as old as you feel," he said. Asked how old he felt, Krich replied, "Oh, I'd say about 75." Between them, the new couple now have 15 children, 27 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren.
