Reform Services in Israel Israel, 'Egyptian

Never since a "Spanish troupe
proposed holding a bull fight
in Israel, have the country's re-
ligious parties been so ready to
take up cudgels for a. cause as
today. The reason: holding Re-
form services in Jerusalem.
It all started when Prof. Nel-
son Glueck, president of He-
brew Union College, Cincinnati,
proposed setting up a school of
archaeology in Jerusalem. A
noted archaelogist, who likes to
spend his free time on archae-.
ological treasure hunts in the
barren vastness of the semi-
mapped Negev, Prof. Glueck
wanted to set up an institute
for his students who would
come from the U. S. These stu-
dents would all be members of
the Reform synagogue and as
such they would want to hold_
services in the manner they
were accustomed.
Municipal Council Trembles
The site selected for the school
is near the King\ David Hotel,
a short distance from no-man's
land, and offering a panoramic
view of the brooding walls of
the Old City, Erecting the
building would help to relieve
Jerusalem's chronic unemploy-
ment situation while adorning
the capital with another center
which would - attract world-wide
attention, especially in the light
of the great amount of archae-
ological work being undertaken
here by many bodies.
When the Jerusalem Munici-
, pal Council, which also sits as
the Local Town Planning Com-
mission, came to discuss grant-
ing a license for the building,
it got cold feet and began a
series of delaying tactics. • The
application was shuffled back
and forth:. No one dared to
bring it out in the open and
either propose to accept it or
reject it.
Prof. Glueck's Concessions
The reason for this was sim-
ple. The Jerusalem Municipal
Council, headed by Mayor Ger-
shon Agron, is run by a coali-
tion of religious and labor par-
ties, both about equally strong.
The labor parties, who were
willing to approve the license,
dared not do so against ' the
