Izvestia Backs. Suez Nationalization; Rabbis' Report "What's Happening Behind
Calls Ben-Gurion an 'Extremist'
The Iron Curtain" In Detroit Times Series
NEW YORK, (JTA) — A
severe attack on Israel was pub-
lished in Izvestia, official organ
of the Soviet Government, the
New York Times reported in a
cable from Moscow.
The cable said that the Soviet
_government announced its sup-
port of Egypt's nationalization
of the Suez Canal.
Izvestia said that statements
in Israeli government circles
cast doUbt on Israel's desire to
seek peace. "A small group of
military rulers of Israel are try-
ing to lead that country on a
path fraught with dangerous
consequences," the Mose 0 w
newspaper wrote. It included
Premier Ben-Gurion in its list
'of "extremists."
Discussing t•h e Israeli-Arab
situation, Izvestia. took, .excep-
tion to recent statements by
Premier Ben-Gurion and Abbe
ban, Ambassador to the United
States, alluding to "punishment"
of the , Arab- states for reported
provocations.
.Izvestia charged 'that Israeli
leaders had created the impres-
sion of fulfilling an "alien will"
because "in the ruling circles of
Israel they speak openly about
the fact that the war that would
begin in Palestine would not
remain a local war."

House was told by Rabbi 'M.
Lieberman, the only Russian-
speaking member of a delega-
tion of the New York Board of
Rabbis which recently com-
pleted a study tour of the USSR,
Poland and Czechoslovakia.
"Russian Jews, in spite of the
fact that the atmosphere apPears
to be freer- today, remain fear-
ful and uncertain of their fu-
ture," the rabbi reported. He
cited the fact that Soviet Jews
whom he met insisted that their
meetings be kept secret or cam-
ouflaged.
Rabbi Lieberman stressed that
-a new Jewish prayerbook, which
has been in preparation for the
past two years, has not yet been
published. "If the Soviet leaders
really wish to atone for the sins
of Stalin, they should not wait
another two years to"publish the
promised prayerbook," he said.
He revealed that hand-printed
prayer books are now being cir-
culated at $100 each.
The most paradoxical fact dis-
covered on the t 0 u r, i n the
rabbi's view, was - that Soviet
Passports include reference . to
the Jewish identity of . • those
holding them. This fact, he
stressed, "is ironically respon-
sible for helping to retain a
lingering recognition of Jewish
consciousness among Jewish
youth in Soviet Russia."
The rabbi concluded that un-
less some unbroken link is es-
tablished between Russian
Jewry and the Jews of -the
world, Russian Jewry faces ex-
toinction.

Polish Party Boss Asks
War on Anti-Semitism.
LONDON, (JTA)—The Polish
NeWs Agency here - reported that
the question of anti-Semitism
in Poland was raised by the
head of Poland's Communist
Party, -Edward Ochab, in his re-
port to the last plenary session
of the central committee of the
Polish Workers. Party.
Ochab is quoted as having
stated:
"The party should show spe-
cial concern and attention to
safeguard legality in relation to
national minorities. The party
must redouble its efforts to com-
bat all manifestations of na-
tionalism, anti-Semitism a n d
discrimination in relation t o
citizens of non-Polish nation-
ality to safeguard their true
equality in all fields of life, and
must see to it that all harm
done in this field .which can be
put right, should be put right."

Detroit Reunion
of Father and Son
Aided by Congress
. It took an act
in. of Con.gress,
but this week
Detroit a happy
family, gathered at the reunion
of a- father and 'son who feared
they might have been separated
.longer than the seven waiting
years they already had spent.
When Max Kozlowski, 57,
sailed aboard the SS Berlin
from Bremerhaven, Germany,
he arrived in
New York to
be greeted by
his son, Marvin.
They are the
only two sur-
vivors of a
once proud and
happy family
of seven.
The reunion
Max Kozlowski was made pos-
sible by House Resolution 968
of the U.S. Congress, which was
passed after a delay of many
years, this May 7.
A cousin of the Kozlowski's;
Joshua Joyrich, who has been
active in numerous communal
activities, had approached Rep.
John D. Dingell, Sr. to grant the
elder Kozlowski's entry, to this
country.
With assistance from num-
erous people in the local com-
munity and the intercession of
A. S. Hyman, of New York, who
met Kozlowski while the former
served as a major under Gen.
Lucious Clay in Europe, legis-
lation for Kozlowski's entry was
speeded.
Also aiding the immigration
of Kozlowski were Rep. John
Dingel 1, Jr., who continued
where his late father had left
off, Sen. Pat McNamara, late
Se n a t e Judiciary Committee
chairman, Sen. Harley M. Kil-
gore and Rep. Francis E. Walter,
of the House Judiciary Com-
mittee.
Marvin Kozlowski and his
wife, Edith, each made two trips
to Washington to testify before
'Congressional -- committees be-
fore the action for passage of
the special act was taken.
But all the delay and worry
and anxiety seems worthwhile
now that the family is again
together. They are residing here
at 4267 Duane.
