. Friday, August 3, 1956—THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 2Q Orthodox Rabbis Seek to Liberalize Divorces NEW YORK, (JTA) — The Rabbinical Alliance of America, an Orthodox group, called upon New York State authorities to liberalize the divorce laws of the state of New Yol-k. The plea was heard in testimony at the Joint Legislative Committee on Matrimonial and Family Laws, which conducted its hear- ings at the Bar Association of New York. The Alliance also urged that a marriage guidance and coun- seling service be established, whose function it would be to explore with the parties seeking divorce, the possibility of recon- ciliation. "It is our belief that a clergy- man's participation in these clinical sessions would prove most beneficial since the guid- ance of a spiritual leader is sought in .moments of crisis in one's family or personal life," the rabbinical organization said. B. C. R. Says Men of Science Proving to Be Most Prolific Non-Professional Writers Two of the most prolific Jew- ish writers in America, both in Yiddish and in English, are not professional writers at all. One is a physician with a promi- nent place in his profession and the other is a dentist of acknowledged scientific stand- ing. The first of these writers has just published a Yiddish volume "Between Peace and War" which among other matters deals with the history of the Jewish Congress movement. He is no other than our old friend, Dr. Joseph Tanenbaum, whom I first learned to know in 1919 at the Peace Conference at Versailles to which he came as a delegate from the organized Jewry of Galicia, Poland. Since coming to America in the early twenties, he has practically encompassed his life here with separate ca- reers, one in medicine and the other . in literature. Interspersed with these activities were al- w a y s community endeavors, particularly in the Zionist movement as well as in the American Jewish Congress and the World Jewish Congress. Dr. Tanenbaum, who had served in the medical corps in World War I, began his literary work with a book of intensely dramatic short stories based on his adventures in the war. Other books have dealt with different phases of the Jewish problem, the struggle for Jewish national restoration in Palestine and related themes. On his list of accomplishments are also two volumes on medical subjects. The new volume on the his- tory of the Jewish Congress like most Yiddish books is now being printed in. Buenos Aires, Argen- tina. Dr. Simon Solomon is even more active and prolific than his colleague in the medical profes- sion. A busy dentist with a large practice, he has succeeded in producing a dozen or more vol- umes, both in Yiddish and in English. This is only part of his labors as he is very active and in fact has become a leader in a number of organizations which represent his profession. He has written on a variety of subject 5, from children's stories to folk-lore, historical and literary themes. He also cultivates several hobbies like the advancement of Yiddish, the promotion of secular Judaism as represented in the Jewish Ethical Culture Society, etc. That he rejoices in Jewish humor and folk stories is indi- cated in various parts of his work and especially in his book on the "Wise Men of Chelm and Their Merry Tales." A memor- able revelation of intimate Jew- ish life and the charm of Jewish childhood in a small town in Lithuania is depicted in his new book, "My Jewish Roots," pub- lished by the Jewish Publica- tion Society of America. It is translated from the Yiddish by Shlorno Katz. Bernard G. HAVEN, MICHIGAN CASABLANCA, ( J T A) — Zionism is "another form of colonialism," an Istiqlal leader declared in Rabat, the Moroc- can capital. Istiqlal is the lead- ing nationalist party in this country. Si Mohamed Lyazyde, secre- tary of the party, ruled out any possibility of diplomatic rela- tions between Morocco and Israel. He declared that it was the duty of Moslems to fight Zion- ism "until it is defeated." The Istiqlal Party, he said is in "step with other Arab nations on the question of Israel." 2 & 3 room newly decorated fur- nished apartments. Also sleeping rooms. Air cooled. As a result, this old-time favorite is now gaining new rec- ognition as a particularly ap- propriate food for calorie-con- trolled modern menus.
