30 Jewish Students Take Part in 'Living Arabic' Experiment

LET THEM DAVEN . . I am generally reluctant to inject
myself into a religious d,isputation„but it a ems to me the Israeli
rabbinate was trodding an erroneous path when it put its foot
down against Reform "davening" by students in the library of
the jerusalem Archaeological School, sponsored by the Hebrew
Union College—Jewish Institute of America. The way to,
"tshuveh," repentance, it seems, is through "davening" of any
kind rather than alienation from shul. Ideological opposition to
Reform Judaism loses its deeper significance when it sacrifices
the great principle of tolerance.
A CORRECTION . . . Homer Bigart in the New York Times
recently said of Ben-Gurion than he gives the impression of an
Old Testament patriarch who nevertheless refuses to turn cheek
to enemy. Coming from such an excellent journalist as Bigart,
the clearly unintentional mistake was evidently due more to
haste of pen than lack of awareness that the turn-your-other-
cheek-to-your-enemy doctrine, so rarely observed by our Chris-
tian friends, derives from the New Testament.
QUESTION AND ANSWER . . . The understandable effort
of Orthodox synagogues to derive pecuniary gains from bar-
mitzvah observances that have become so colorful a tradition
in the Jewish community of America raises a number of seemingly
unanswerable questions. Since to induce sin is as sinful as sin
itself, the question arises about the religious propriety of Ortho-
dox synagogues in approving Sabbath bar-mitzvah celebrations
whose attendance entails desecration of the Sabbath by guests
who must travel to shul from distant places. One rabbi with
whom I discussed this quandary said the synagogues were acting
on the wholly proper assumption that no Jew desecrated the
Sabbath for a bar-mitzvah. A more realistic and perhaps more
candid reply was recently given by a reader in a Yiddish news-
paper when he declared in a letter to the editor that "the syna-
gogue is not responsible for what the worshippers do on the
outside" since it is a "democratic institution and not a detective
agency."

Scientist Says Coffee
Can Grow in Israel
REHOVOT, (JTA)—Dr. Yaa-
kov Pelleg, director of the Agri-
cultural Research Station here,
told newsmen last week that
coffee can be grown in Israel.
And he proved the point by
serving them a cup of coffee
brewed from local beans. He
added that much remained to
be done in the experimental
stage, , including the determina-
tion of the best growing -areas
and which types of beans best
suited Israel's coffee-drinking
public. But he • said he had no
doubt that enough of the beans

growing potential has been car-
ried out here for ten years by
Dr. Israel Gindel of the station's

`Jewish Consciousness '
Strong iti Red Lands,
LONDON, (JTA) — Four
American rabbis who have just
completed a tour of the Soviet
Union, Poland and Czechoslo-
vakia found that there was
strong "Jewish consciousness"
among Jews in these countries
despite prohibitions or restric-
tions on the teaching of the
Jewish religion in schools or
classes.
The rabbis, members of a
delegation of the New York
Board of Rabbis, said here that
the general facilities for the
promotion of Jewish religion
and cultural life are meagre in
the Communist countries.
They reported that their visit
to the larger Jewish centers had
been greatly appreciated and
that if similar visits from other
Jewish communities could be
arranged the Jews of the Com-
munist countries would un-
doubtedly welcome them.
The four stopped -off in Lon-
don to meet with Barnett Dan-
ner, president of the Board of
Deputies of British Jews, and
other Board leaders as well as
with Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie
and the spiritual leader of the
Sephardic community.
The four are: Rabbis Harold
H. Gordon, Jacob C. Grossman,
Joseph Miller and Israel Mow-
showitz .
