Recalling Morris Rosenfeld,
Famous Poet of the Sweatshop
Did Morris Rosenfeld "singer
of the ghetto," gifted poet of the
sweatshops, ever sell a poem
to a Yiddish newspaper for as
little as 25c.? Thereon hangs a
tale.
It all begins with some remi t
niscences recently published by
Rose Shomer, daughter of the
most prolific Yiddish novelist,
the late Nachum Mayer Schaike-
vitz (Shomer). Miss Shomer or
Mrs. Batchelis , avers that one
Yiddish publisher at one time
entirely rebuffed Rosenfeld and
told him that his paper was in
no need of poetry. Thereupon,
according to the story, Mrs. Ro-
senfeld took upon herself the
task of selling her husband's
wares. She went to the newspa-
per and sold the rejected poem
for 25c. However, a report like
that even out of the ancient
days was not allowed to go un-
challenged. -
Louis S. Bieley is a veteran
of the Yiddish press who began
from office boy up and was as-
sociated first for many years
with the Tagblat (Jewish Daily
News) and then for almost as
many years with—the Morgen
Journal (Jewish Morning Jour-
nal), after the two pap e r s
merged. Mr. Bieley who had

papers and finally handled the
circulation department of the
joint publication knows the his-
tory of Yiddish journalism from
beginning to end. He took it
upon himself to write to the
column called "Day to Day" and
conducted for the Day and
Morning Journal by Jacob Glad-
stein. Mr. Bieley quite skillfully
sketched the character of several
of the old time Yiddish publish-
ers and especially of Leon Ka-
maiky who, together with Eze-
kiel Sarasohn, served as pub-
lishers of the Tagablat and who
himself was a dominant figure
of his time not only in journal-
ism but also in community mat-
ters affecting the earlier Jewish
settlement. Kamaiky was also
a scholar, a noted maskil, a man
of wit and humor, who helped
to create the HIAS and other
institutions, and in general left
his mark upon Jewish life in
America.
Mr. Bieley took pains to ab-
solve him and other publishers
and editors from the charge of
indifference to literary art and
in any case from the reproach
of the cruel treatment of poets.
In addition, there came a let-
ter from another veteran, a poet
and talented prose writer. He
was no other than our old friend
Michael Aaronson and he sent
his contribution to a department
conducted by Mr. Gladstein and
published in the Yiddische
Kempfer. Mr. Aaronson, while
he did not share MT. Bieley's
estimate of their, generosity, ne-
vertheless also acquitted them
of any lack of consideration for
the needs and comforts of their
writing employees.
The name of Morris Rosen-
feld, the matchless Yiddish
lyricist who was originally
made known to the outside
world by the late Prof. Leo
Wiener, Slavanic scholar at
Harvard and historian of Yid-
dish literature, comes up
again and again. His suffer-
ings and struggles and his ro-
mantic his t o r y first as a
sweatshop worker and then as
a famous poet are depicted in
a number of different volumes
and particularly in a small
Yiddish book, Per Onheib fun
die Yiddishe Leteratur in
Amerika (The Beginning of
Yiddith Literature in Ameri-
ca) by Kalman Marmor.
When, in his declining days,
Rosenfeld almost completely
lost his sight, Israel Zangwill,
his friend and admirer, endea-
vored to arouse sympathy for
him by saying that the Jewish
people were blind in not recog-
nizing early enough and not suf-
ficiently rewarding his great tal-
ent.

Reflections
Why are flowers dead
When snow is on the ground?
Why are things best said
Where love and warmth are found?
And grass withdraws from sight,
When winter shows it's face.
All things protrude to light,
Darkness seems like disgrace.
The soul is lodged within us,
The skin is our outer self.
Living beautifully, the soul can cross
Beyond our meager, outer self.
God is about us in everything,
Yet we often live as dead
When we fail to shout and sing
The manifold glory of a piece of
bread.
Every life is great, and unbelievable.
Our breath, our feelings, so unique!
