NEW YORK, (JTA)—Peretz
Markish and Itzik Feffer, two of
Soviet Russia's outstanding Yid-
dish writers, who disappeared
in 1948 and were executed, have
been posthumously rehabili-
tated in the pages of "Literatur-
naya Gazeta," Russia's top liter-
ary journal. -The rehabilitation
was reported in a dispatch from
Moscow to the New York Times
by Jack Raymond.
The magazine printed six of
Markish's poems, translated into
Russian, and a preface to his
work which lauded Feffer as
the discoverer of Markish's
ent. While nothing definite was
stated as to their disappearance
and death, the practice of giving
favorable publicity is often used
in Russia as a means of clear-
ing persons who have been dis-
graced or have been allowed to
be forgotten.
The six poems were highly
praised in a foreword by Niko-
lai Tikhonov, a leading Soviet
poet, as having "poetic force
and genuine - high emotion." The
poems, he said, were marked by
"great characters, civic inspira-
tion and strong intonation."
Tikhonov also reminisced about
conversations held with Mark-
ish in the last years of World
War II.
Both Feffer and Markish
-were arrested by the secret po-
lice in the last years of Stalin's
reign. There has never been
any public confirmation of their
execution.

LONDON—The British government accepts the principle
that Israel should have a sufficient quantity of arms for its
own defense ; Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd told Commons
Tuesday on the second day of a major foreign policy debate,
but, he continued, Britain believes that Israel is currently in a
position to defend itself.
The statement, he said, that the military balance is in
Israel's favor takes into account, he said, its unified command,
internal communications, technical skill and training, and the
capacity to use and maintain the arms it possesses.
Asked how these factors could be used against Russian
bombers, the Foreign Secretary said, "One has to take into
account the fighter resources which may be available to Israel
at the time the bombers are capable of offensive capacity."
He _asserted that if United Nations Secretary General Dag
Hammarskjold is able to procure full compliance with the Arab-
Israel armistice agreements, the next step will be to "try to
reach an agreement for either the settlement of one or more
major - problems or to see a comprehensive settlement." He said
he believed that it was unwise for Israel to feel that her safety
depended on arms alone. He noted, too, that the Tripartite
Declaration of 1950 guaranteed Israel the right to defend itself.

other reasons Britain had treaty commitments" to supply Iraq

AJC Files Appeal
on Court Ruling
NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
American Jewish Congress filed
an appeal against part of the
ruling handed down by a mem-
ber of the New York State
COmmission Against Discrimi-
nation regarding a complaint
made by the AJC that the New
York City Domestic Relations
Court practiced religious dis-
crimination in the employment
of probation officers.
While the ruling, issued July
9, upheld the position that re-
ligion was not to be consid-
ered in making appointments
of probation officers to the,
court as a whole, it failed to-
deal with the charge that the
court makes assignments to the
Children's Court Division of
the court on the basis of a re-
ligious quota.
The AJC pointed out that
there is an essential difference
between probation service in
the Family Part of the Domes-
tic Relations Court of the City
Of New York and that in the
Children's Part of the Court;
that from the viewpoin of the
probation officer service in the
Family Part is inferior to that
of the Children's Part; and that
accordingly, assignment of a
probation officer to the Family
Part rather than to the Chil-
dren's Part solely because of
his religious affiliation consti-
tutes an act of religious dis-

Canada's Decision on Jets
Expected Within Two Weeks
OTTAWA (JTA)—The Cana-
dian government did not slam
the door on Israel's request for
the sale of jet fighter planes
when it refused to supply the
planes without support from
other Western sources, political
observers pointed out.
These observers note that
Canada has contacted a number
of European countries, includ-
ing Britain, France and Italy,
to jointly supply Israel with
arms, among which would be
Canadian-built Sabrejets. A de-
cision on such a project may
be available in two weeks.
It is believed that sharp pro-
tests by, Canadian Jews and
non-Jews friendly to Israel
caused the government to take
this laitest move. The protests
took on an additional edge after
the Canadian government an-
nounced that it would ship
planes to Germany.
