Senate Includes Kashrut Procedures in Slaughtering Bill Rival Druze Sheikhs Feud on Fund-Raising (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) WASHINGTON—A bill advancing humane methods of slaughtering cattle, specifically designating kosher ritual procedure as one such method, Monday was passed by the Senate. Senator Hubert H. Humphrey had sought and incor- porated advice from orthodox Jewish sources into the measure. The bill provides for no compulsory changes in slaugh- tering practices but calls for the establishment of an ad- visory committee. At Sen. Humphrey's request, the ad- visory committee must include authority on kosher meth- ods, probably rabbis. The advisory committee would report back to the Senate in two years on its findings. Sen. Hum- phrey is seeking wider application of the traditional Jewish concept of merciful slaughtering. William Benton, pub- lisher of the Encyclopedia Bri- tannica, who received 39 of the 55 planned volumes of the So- viet reference work. In transplanting major arti- cles from the Great Soviet En- cyclopedia for comparison with t h e Encyclopedia Britannica, Sen. Benton's office found quite a difference between its own article on Israel and the article on the same subject in the So- viet volume. N7 British Press Scores Editor for Stirring Up _ False Race Problem LONDON, (JTA)—The Brit- ish Press Council, a voluntary organization of representatives of publishers and newspaper- men's unions, condemned an editor's refusal to correct a report that a fire in the Brixton Synagogue in London was a sign of a new flare-up of race hatred. The request for a retraction and correction had been Made by Rabbi A. Steinberg, Spiritual leader of Brixton Synagogue. The Press Council's action followed a formal complaint by the Board of Deputies of British Jews against the editor of the "South London Advertiser," a suburban weekly. The Council deplored the "dangerously exaggeraled tone of the article" and condemned the editor for refusing to print the letter by Rabbi Steinberg asking him to correct these "serious misstate- ments." The offending article had fea- tured the fire as evidence of a new anti-Semitic campaign in the neighborhood and had declared that Jewish and non- Jewish residents of the area . were praying that the fire was not a "signal for race war." It further stated that the synagogue had been desecrated a few weeks earlier when a pig's head had been nailed to the door on a Sabbath. Rabbi Steinberg denied that there was any truth to the incident or that Jews were praying that the fire was not a signal for the outbreak of racial violence. After the end of the 1948 war, the article in the Soviet ency- clopedia continues, "the Amer- ican imperialists became even More active in Israel. They took over the positions held by Eng- land and transformed Israel into a colony and into a stra- tegic base in the Middle East, to be used as a jumping off point for a war of aggression. "The ruling circles of Israel conduct a reactionary policy; the aim of this policy is to si- lence the democratic forces and to oppress the Jewish working masses and the Arab minority, which is deprived of any rights. These ruling circles maintain and strengthen nationalistic and chauvinistic attitudes among the backward strata of the population." TIBERIAS, (JTA)—A quarrel about the alms collected at the Druze shrine of Nebi Shu'eib near here has' erupted into a full-scale feud between two rival Druze clans. The m•nopoloy on fund col- lecting by Sheikh Amin Tarrif has now been challenged by Sheikh Jaber Mu'adi, a mem- ber of the Knesset. Sheikl Mu'adi is understood to have set up a guard drawn from his own clan around the shrine, which is competing with the other Druze leader's clan in fund-raising. The spat actually stems back to a quarrel three years ago when some Druze demanded an accounting of alms distribution on the grounds that they were the property of all Druze in Israel. Sheikh Amin refused to give in; claiming that the fund- raising was not an all-Druze affair but an exclusive posses- sion of his clan.
