JDC Aided 164,000 in '5
Annual Report Shows

"Ten years after V-E Day it
is a matter of considerable note
that the aid of the Joint Distri-
bution Committee should still
be required by Jewish commun-
ities in 25 countries of the
world," the 1955 JDC annual
report declares.
Moses A. Leavitt, JDC Execu-
tive Vice-Chairman, in a section
of the annual report called "Ten
Years Later," declares that "in
1955 JDC's aid was required by
more than 164,000 men, women
and children in 25 countries,
nearly 100,000 of them in the
Moslem world."
Mr.,Leavitt notes that for its
1955 operations JDC appropri-
ated $25,500,000. For 1956 the
agency has adopted a budget of
$29,200,000 to aid an 'estimated
200,000 needy Jews overseas.

Dr. Glueck Makes
Final Negev Tour

Dr. Nelson Glueck, president
of Hebrew Union College-Jew-
ish Institute of Religion and
noted Biblical archaeologist who
discov ered King Solomon's
copper mines and his Red Sea
port of Ezion-Geber, flew June
30 to Israel to complete his fifth
and final summer of a mile-by-
mile exploration of the Negev.
His archaeological expedition
will again be sponsored by the
Louis M. Rabinowitz Founda-
tion.
In last summer's expedition,
Dr Glueck uncovered the ac-
tual 160-mile route by which the
ancient Israelites sought in vain
to enter 'Canaan from the South.
He also discovered more than
300 ancient villages, some of
them dating back 4,000 years.
He brought back a petrified
shark's • tooth believed to be
70,000,000 years old, and a num-
ber of arrowheads thought to
be 10,000 years old.
As a result of his survey of
the Negev, Dr. Glueck has es-
tablished the fact that this
region, once considered an ir-
reclaimable wasteland, had been
inhabited from pre-historic
times and has the same poten-
tialities for human inhabitation
today as it had then.
He has uncovered numerous
Nabataean and Byzantine agri-
cultural settlements which by
skillful irrigation methods have
literally 'made the • desert
bloom." His findings in the
Negev have been used by Israel
as a key to its reclamation and
resettlement.

Remember not only to say the
right thing in the right place,
but, far more difficult still, to
leave unsaid the wrong thing at
the tempting moment.-Benja-
min Franklin.

FBI in Boston Probes
Anti-Semitic Letters

BOSTON, (JTA) - The FBI
and postal authorities have been
asked to investigate anti-Semitic
letters sent from California to
Jewish community centers, tem-
ples and othet institutions in
Boston and other cities of the
United States, it was revealed
here by Robert E. Segal, execu-
tive director of the Jewish Com-
munity Council.
The letters ostensibly come
from a Nisei (Japanese-Ameri-
can) organization in Gardena,
California. However, Nisei
spokesmen in that city deny
that they come from Japanese
and believe that they are a
"deliverate attempt to incense
one minority group against an-
other."
