JEWISH NEWS
STAMP COLLECTOR

By HENRY B. STERN
A broad and fascinating area
of interest within the overall
scope of the hobby of stamp
collecting is "philatelic litera-
ture." Stamp catalogues, hand-
books, dictionaries, magazines,
newspapers and guide books
would be considered aspects of
"philatelic literature." The seri-
ous collector of any age is sure
to have some pieces of phi-
latelic literature close by his
albums. Such background ma-
terial. makes the hobby more-
interesting and certainly edu-
cational. Advanced collectors
frequently make a distinct spe-
cialty out of collecting books,
pamphlets, catalogues and other
items of philatelic interest.
Here are several examples of
"philatelic literature" that read-
ers of this column will find of
value:
United States Postal Slogan
Cancel Catalogue, published by
Moe Luff. A fascinating book
illustrating commemorative and
other postal slogan cancels that
have appeared on U.S. mail.
The Romance of Stamp Col-
lecting, by Ernest A. Kehr.
Stamps Magazine, published
by H. L. Lindquist. One of the
leading weekly stamp journals.
Postage Stamps of the United
States, published by the U. S.
Post Office Dept. This booklet
is re-issued from time to time
and tells the complete story of
U.S. stamps dating bact to the
first series of 1847.
The New American Stamp
Catalogue, published by Minkus
Publications, Inc. An excellent
companion to the Post Office
Dept. booklet mentioned above.
This catalogue was an award
winner in the "philatelic litera-
ture section" of the 1955 Stock-
holm Philatelic Exhibition.

Tourist Txperiment'
Proven Successful

JERUSALEM (JTA) — An
"experiment" in tourist rela-
tions introduced three months
ago has proven so successful
that it will shortly become a
permanent feature of Israel's
tourist program.
The "experiment," the intro-
duction of American tourists to
Israel families, has proven pop-
ular with both Americans and
Israelis. The government has
prepared a list of volunteer
hosts who are willing to take
tourists into their homes for
visits.
The program will soon bp ex-
tended to collective settlements,
Arab villages, artists colonies
and even to Bedouin camps. This
will give the tourist an oppor-
tunity to contrast modern Israel,
with its intensive agriculture
and up-to-date industry, with
the Oriental life in villages and
desert encampments.
