Brooklyn Boy Wins
Junior Chess Title
BROOKLYN, N. Y. (JTA)—
Bobby Fischer, 13-year-old
chess competitor, is the new
national junior champion of the
United States Chess - Federation.
Bobby, who just finished
eighth grade, won the title in a
week-long competition against
27 others boys ranging in age
from 15 to 20.
Bobby learned the moves of
the game from an older sister,
Joan, now 19, when he was
just 6 years old. He became
seriously interested in the game
when he was 8.
But he'd like it to be known
that his interest in chess is
not the only important facet of
his life. He has a couple of
other interests. One is rock
and roll music. And the other
—no story from Brooklyn would,
be complete without it—is that
the national junior chess cham-
pion is an ardent Dodger fan

Something New Has Been Added!
We Are Pleased to Announce
The. Addition to Our Staff of
Rowan's Book Seeks
To Eradicate Racial,
Economic Injustices
"The Pitiful and the Proud,"
by Carl T. Rowan (published
by Random House, 457 Madi-
son, N.Y. 22), is a strong appeal
for courage and for the aban-
donment of arrogance in the
treatment of the Asian racial
problems.
Mr. Rowan, who has had an
interesting literary career and
who has received high honors
and numerous awards for his
"leadership in fostering better
race relations," makes an in-
teresting study in this book of
the racial, political and econo-
mic forces at work in Pakistan,
India and Southeast Asia.
Much light is shed in this
book upon the Bandung Con-
ference, the problems that
create the tensions in that area,
the warnings to the West from
the developments in Asia.
The author has an interesting
preface in which he reveals that
he had walked into the face of
a warning to him by a Negro,
editor "that to show any criti-
cism of India in these times is
racial heresy, since that coun-
try symbolizes 'a new world
force against the white man's
organized arroganc e'." Mr.
Rowan then writes that for the
first time he saw "the shrewd
workings of the international
Communist, conspiracy" and that
"this book attests my lingering
faith in the democratic process
and its ability to eradicate ra-
cial, social and economic in-
justices."
