Labor Zionists to Name New Institute
Building for th e Late Dr. Hayim Greenberg

The new Labor Zionist Build-
ing, at 19161 Schaefer, will be
named for Dr. Hayim Green-
berg, an outstanding Zionist
leader. The name was chosen
at a recent mass meeting under
the chairmanship of Morris L.
Schaver, president of the Labor
Zionist Movement here.
The selection of names was
narrowed down to Dr. Nahum
Syrkin and Dr. Greenberg.

Six Austrians on Trial in Vienna
Charged With Killing 34,000 Jews

VIENNA (JTA)—Six former
Austrian policemen who went
on trial here Monday charged
with the massacre of Jews in
Nazi-occupied Poland on Tues-
day pleaded not guilty. The trial
attracted nationwide attention.
The chief prosecutor, Dr. H.
Reiter, read a 40-page statement
in which he stated that all six
became members of a security
police detachment in the Bory-
slaw district of Poland in 1941.
Some 34,000 Jews were living in
that area at one time and only
few more than 500 survived, he
added. The prosecution stated
that. Jews were shot down not
alone as part of an official ex-
termination policy but some-

U. S. Rabbis Permitted
To Examine Rare Jewish
Volumes in Leningrad

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Ameri-
can rabbis Visiting Leningrad
were permitted to examine the
priceless collection of old Jew-
ish manuscripts at the Salty-
kov-Shedrin Library, the for-
mer Public Library of Lenin-
grad, it was reported fom Mos-
cow. The rabbis were told by
Soviet officials that photocopies
of the manuscripts would be
made available to f or elgn
scholars.
The collection is part of the
famous collection of Hebrew
and Yiddish books of the late
Baron David Guinzburg, noted
Jewish philanthropist and Ori-
entalist, whose library, was na-
tionalized after the Bolshvik
Revolution. It includes a He-
brew Bible printed in the year
1010 and a' leather bound vol-
ume of parchment letters writ-
ten in the 10th century by
Prince Joseph of the Khazars
describing his conversion to
Judaism.
(In a cable to the New York
Times from Moscow, Jack Ray-
mond reported: "It is under-
stood that Prof. Solomon Zeit-
lin, of the Rabbinical Studies
Department of Dropsie College,
Philadelphia, saw the Guinz-
burg collection in Leningrad
before World War II).
